Volkswagen Golf 1 Elektro, VW’s first ‘Electric’ car

Did you know about the Golf Mk1 electric car which Volkswagen engineers produced in 1976? VW made just 20 units of these Golf 1 Elektro hatchbacks (based on a car sold in the U.S. which carried the name ‘Rabbit’).

The flat, tubular, lead battery system (at 96 volts) had a 13.4-kwh capacity but turned the Rabbit into a two-seater. Top speed was a healthy 100km/h and it had a range of about about 30 miles. One item of note is that its 15-kw (20-horsepower) DC motor weighed in at 176 pounds.
