Renault Megane RS Trophy-R breaks Nurburgring lap record again

Betters the Civic Type R time by just a few seconds!

Renault has reclaimed the Nurburgring lap record from the awesome Honda Civic Type R for front-wheel drive cars with this new limited edition Renaultsport Megane RS 275 Trophy-R.

The 275hp lightweight hot hatch took a best time of 7 minutes 40.1 seconds which is 3.7 seconds faster than the previous record holder, the Civic Type R. Setting a quick time around the demanding 13-mile circuit requires some extreme performance measures.

This RS 275 Trophy-R takes after its predecessor, the Renault Megane RS 265 Trophy who completed a lap of Nürburgring Nordschleife in just 8 minutes and 7.97 seconds in 2011 and then in 2014 a lightweight Renault Megane RS275 which is 101kg lighter than the standard car, at 1280kg slashed 14 seconds off the company’s previous Nurburgring lap record set in 2011 with an awesome time of 7 minutes and 54.36 seconds.

In early 2017, the all new Honda Civic Type R smashed the Nürburgring lap record for front-wheel-drive cars, clocking an impressive time of just 7min 43.8sec lap time.

Renault Sport says it’ll only build a few hundred examples of the Trophy-R, with sales beginning later this year and we are quite sure that all units will be taken up by European buyers as you reading this.

Here is the list of the slower cars around this legendary track:

  • Chevrolet Corvette C5 Z06 (7:56)
  • Porsche 911 Turbo – 996 (7:56)
  • Porsche Panamera Turbo (7:56)
  • Caterham R500 Superlight (7:55)
  • Ferrari F430 F1 (7:55)
  • 2008 Nissan GT-R (7:54)
  • Porsche 911 Turbo – 997 (7:54)
  • Mercedes CLK DTM AMG (7:54)
  • Lamborghini Gallardo LP 560-4 (7:52)

PRESS Release:

Compared to the Megane R.S. Trophy, the Renault MEGANE R.S. TROPHY-R, equipped with the same 300hp engine, owes its increased speed to the weight reduction (up to 130 kg), the work on aerodynamics and the more radical development of its chassis for road holding.

The Renault MEGANE R.S. TROPHY-R will be launched on the market before the end of 2019, as an exclusive limited edition of a few hundred units only.

Renault Sport has built on a partnership with some of the most recognised specialists in their disciplines: Akrapovič, Brembo, Bridgestone, Öhlins and Sabelt.

MEGANE R.S. TROPHY-R sets a 07’40’’100 new record on the Nordschleife 20.600 km lap, and a 07’45’’389 reference time on the official whole lap of 20.832 km.

With drivers from the Renault F1@ Team Daniel Ricciardo and Nico Hülkenberg behind the wheel, on 24 May in Monaco, on the fringes of the Formula One Grand Prix, the MEGANE R.S. TROPHY-R will make its first physical appearance.
