Is Billboard and Online Advertising In Malaysia Dying?

Traditional methods of marketing/advertising like print advertisements, newspapers, flyers and billboards are starting to see a decline in Malaysia and the rest of the world.

If you lived in Klang Valley you would have immediately realized the ‘rise’ in Billboards along every highway and off-ramp in the past years. Big blocks of space taking up the skyline was part of our lives until recently. Why recently? Let us explain.

As technology continues to grow smarter, the valuable role that highway billboards play is not as important as it used to be and the clear sign of this are the pictures below where we saw many empty gray Billboard spaces along a 1-kilometer stretch of the Federal Highway heading towards Kuala Lumpur.

On the journey back along the same stretch, there were equal number of empty Billboards from Jalan 222 to Sungei Way.  Why is this happening?

As a one-way form of advertising, many businesses and product marketers have opted out of using billboards altogether as they assume them to be a thing of the past and would rather invest in social media giants advertisements as a means of connecting with and influencing their audience.

Marketers are today looking more towards advertising via social media giants and using their algorithms to target their possible customers. Like billboards, even online and print media is slowly being ignored by brand marketers and their creative agencies.

Media buyers (even the small agencies) are looking at making their jobs easy and instead of working with 30-40 print and online titles on one advertising campaign, they rather work with 2 to 3 social media giants and get their client products ‘out there’ to their targeted consumers. Less work, same profits and more time to chill!

We say this to brand marketers and media buyers who are ignoring online advertising all together.

The next time you need a press release published and or you need media to attend and take event pictures and do interviews, call the social media giants to do it for you. Do not call us!

We are going to do exactly what you are doing to us!
