Tackling The East Coast Backroads With The Porsche Cayenne

The best way to see the ‘Malaysia’ is with a luxury SUV like the Cayenne.

Yes, the Porsche Cayenne is now local assembled in Malaysia, the first time Porsche has set-up assembly facility outside of Europe. The award-winning luxury SUV, Cayenne bagged the Vehicle of the Year 2019.

The award winning luxury SUV, Cayenne bagged the Vehicle of the Year 2019 and later the premium package is also released in Malaysia.

In March 2022, the first ever locally assembled Cayenne rolled out of the Porsche assembly facility in Kulim, Kedah. Priced starting from RM 575,000, the third generation Cayenne gave some reconditioned car importers who were selling used Cayenne’s from England a big headache as their stock of Cayenne’s were more expensive.

The Cayenne Drive Experience

Taking any vehicle on state maintained roads along the East Coast of Malaysia needs added attention as there is uneven tarmac and plenty of small town traffic. Having the Cayenne with us provided some much added comfort and assurance as there is no issue with its road manners and handling on badly maintained roads.

It has a well weighted steering feel and very good road feel on your palms which provides very precise feedback while driving.

Ride quality even with 21-inch wheels is very good as the suspension soaks up all the unevenness provided by these roads. It soothes out the bumps and ruts and the firm and authoritative brakes makes sure we avoid any and all unwanted situations with zipping scooters and law breaking villagers.

The Cayenne comes with a 3.0L turbocharged V6 petrol engine with an output of 340PS and 450Nm of torque which is more than enough for easy overtaking on state maintained roads.

It is paired to an 8-speed Tiptronic S transmission that has shifts that you will hardly feel, even with hard acceleration that delivers a standstill to 100km/h time in just 6.2 seconds.

Best of all is its active all-wheel drive system that will help you keep on ‘track’ when the roads get slippery and adapts to our climate.

The 21-inch wheels with their wide rubber contact ensures a steady steering feel and good feedback when you feel a little adventurous on an open road.

Taking state maintained roads along the East Coast of Malaysia, means keeping your speed sane as some stretches ‘cut’ thru villages and you have motorcyclists crossing from one side to the other with out proper care.

Then, you also get quiet roads snaking its way in between palm oil plantations and here is where you get a sports car response from this Cayenne.

With its Apple Carplay connectivity, we could ‘sync’ our phone and get all our music, messages and even reply messages without looking away from the road ahead.

Yes, make sure you remove or mute your ‘secret’ friends if driving with your better half. It could get tricky if the system alerts you saying ‘sweetie’ or ‘baby cakes’ or ‘babe’ calling.

This could easily end your love affair with this Cayenne. Meanwhile, the standard BOSE surround system delivers true acoustic entertainment, more so with the well insulated cabin keeping traffic noise from entering the cabin.

Rear passengers will get plenty of leg and shoulder room and there are automated sun-blinds for the windows to provide some privacy.

For better comfort during long distance travel, the four-zone climate control allows the driver and individual passengers to take control on the temperature whether they prefer higher temperature or full blast the air-conditioned.

Arriving at any small town like Chukai, Cherating or even Temerloh requires some attention as the roads can be narrow with plenty of motorcycles all over. With the ParkAssist and surround views available, it is easy to park in tight spaces and also drive along old village roads.

After a late dinner, heading back to the hotel, the Dynamic Light System is welcomed as it provides a very clear view ahead and at the sides on the many roads without street lights. It also ‘warns’ village motorcyclists that we are coming along.

The Cayenne Features

With a price starting from RM575k, it provides Malaysian customers with a great option and choice in the premium SUV market.

It is luxury and badge snobbery that the rest are trying to get with their ‘special models costing much more in this popular premium SUV segment.
