All-New Toyota GR86 Launched In Malaysia From RM296K With Manual Option

The all-new Toyota GR86 introduces a manual option for Malaysians as well as a larger engine.

UMW Toyota has launched the second-generation 86 sports car, now marketed as the ‘GR86’. The GR86 was first unveiled back in April 2021 and has garnered positive feedback from enthusiasts thanks to the larger capacity engine that resolves performance gripes with the outgoing model.

Just like the GR Supra, the GR86 is being launched in Malaysia in 2023 with the option of a manual gearbox.

The GR86 builds on the 86’s success by enhancing its performance, dynamics, technology, and styling to set a new benchmark for sportscars. Equipped with a new 2.4-litre horizontally-opposed 4-cylinder engine, producing 237 PS at 7,000 rpm and 250 Nm at 3,700 rpm, the GR86 offers improved torque and better mid-range response.

Customers can choose between a 6-speed manual gearbox or 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission, both with drive modes and Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) settings to customize performance for road or track use.

To maximize handling capability, the GR86 comes with a limited-slip differential on the rear axle. Tuning of the MacPherson strut/double wishbone suspension and steering components provide sharper agility, while weight reduction and a lower center of gravity enhance handling.

Chassis reinforcements significantly improve torsional and lateral rigidity, while large front and rear ventilated disc brakes ensure there is plenty of stopping power.

The exterior design of the GR86 is available in four colours: Ignition Red, Crystal White Pearl, Crystal Black Silica and Magnetic Grey Metallic. The interior design features premium leather and suede seats, a multimedia infotainment system with an 8-inch display, and a configurable 7-inch TFT colour LCD display on the driver’s side, providing all the information about the car’s operation.

The GR86 Active Safety Suite consists of a pre-crash system, lane departure alert, cruise control, and automatic high beam, while parking sensors on the rear bumper help avoid collisions. In the event of a severe accident, up to 7 SRS airbags will deploy while 3-point seatbelts at the front and rear restrain the occupants.

On the road pricing for the 2023 Toyota GR86 starts at RM296,354 for the manual version and RM306,354 for the automatic. This price does not include insurance. UMW Toyota offers a 5-year, unlimited mileage warranty.
