China’s NIO Is Part Of Major European R&D Initiative Into Energy Storage Systems
NIO will play an important part in Europe’s R&D into future energy storage solutions.
NIO, the premium electric vehicle company from China, has announced its participation in the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation program. The company’s Power Products and Solutions division, along with 26 partners, has been awarded funding for further research and development of energy storage systems for electric mobility services. NIO is also offering power grid services with its Power Swap Stations, designed to make energy systems more resilient, efficient, and stable.
Horizon Europe is the EU’s largest research and innovation program, investing a total of €95.5 billion from 2021 to 2027 to bring world-class research teams together to address climate change and achieve the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. NIO and its partners will contribute to the project’s goals through the development and implementation of the company’s innovative Power Swap Station technology and smart electric vehicles.
As part of the three-year project, which officially launched in January 2023, NIO and its partners will examine the application of stationary hybrid energy storage to improve electric vehicle charging performance and reduce the impact on the power grid. The research will also focus on the use of portable battery chargers for electric mobility services, the integration of photovoltaics into charging infrastructure, and the second-life application of batteries.
NIO has over 1,300 Power Swap Stations in operation globally, with ten in Europe and more set to open in the coming months. The company is committed to expanding its presence in Europe, with a global design and product development department in Germany and the UK. By participating in the Horizon Europe program, NIO is demonstrating its commitment to creating a greener future through innovative energy services and collaboration with key partners in the field of electromobility.
