GEELY STARRAY Might Arrive As The PROTON X80

GEELY Unveils STARRAY SUV For The Middle East Market

Geely Auto, Proton’s partner since the arrival of the very popular X70 has not just a couple of SUV’s in its product portfolio. We have seen the Coolray which is the X50 and more recently we have seen the X90 large 3 row SUV.

Now comes news that there is another SUV, the STARRAY. Unveiled in the Middle East since October 2023 and moving across all the various nations in the region, the STARRAY right now seems to be available only in ‘left hand drive’ and Malaysia is a right hand drive market.

Will Geely look at launching this mid-sized SUV in Malaysia (and the ASEAN region) in coming months? Might be the Proton X80 as it sits between the current X70 and X90 in terms of size.

With more and more Malaysians (and ASEAN buyers) loving SUV ownership (large, medium and compact size) it might just make economical sense to offer another SUV in Proton showrooms.

Interestingly, the Starray measures in at 4,670 mm long, 1,900 mm wide and 1,705 mm tall with a wheelbase of 2,777 mm. Dimensions that are incidentally just slightly larger than the Proton X70, which comes in at 4,519 mm long, 1,831 mm wide and 1,694 mm tall.

PRESS RELEASE: Drawing from the Geely Vision Starburst design philosophy, the Starray is not merely a vehicle but a statement, promising an unparalleled driving experience that transcends the ordinary.

At the heart of the Starray lies a design philosophy that marries innovation, aesthetics, and vision. This vehicle is a testament to the art of design, blending futuristic aesthetics with celestial motifs. Every element, from the Stars-aligned Daytime Running Lights to the illuminated Geely badge, resonates with the majesty of the cosmos, casting a spell of positivity and elegance.

The New Starray front facade is a marvel, boasting the industry’s pioneering Super-thin Particle Ray Headlights and the mesmerizing Lightwave Ripple Front Grille. The headlight system, with its flat 15mm lens module, illuminates the path with a brilliant 178lx, epitomizing Geely’s commitment to harmonizing design and functionality.

Its exterior design, characterized by the Galactic Tide Waistline and the Flying Arrow Full-width Taillight, sets a new standard in vehicle lighting. The Starray interior, a symphony of luxurious light brown leather and state-of-the-art technology, captures the spirit of the modern era.

It’s not just about the drive; it’s about the experience. The cabin, with its 13.2-inch infotainment system and Diamond-Cut Crystal Gear Selector, is a testament to luxury and innovation.

Beyond aesthetics, the Starray is a marvel of engineering. Its unique spatial design, bolstered by a class-leading wheelbase of 2777mm and Geely’s Flagship Compact Modular Architecture (CMA), promises unmatched comfort and a premium driving experience.

Powered by the 2.0 TD Drive-E Engine that produces 218 hp and 325 Nm of torque, this four-pot drives the front wheels via a 7-speed dual clutch transmission and is capable of hustling this Geely to 100km/h from standstill in 8.2 seconds and onwards to a 215 km/h top speed.

Its design nuances, from the shimmering 20-inch Silver & Black Wheels to the dynamic two-tone floating roof, exude elegance and sophistication.

Safety and convenience are paramount. The Starray is equipped with features like Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Highway Assist (HWA), and the vigilant Lane Departure Warning System (LDW).

Geely’s dedication to safety is further underscored by its high safety cage body structure and the inclusion of six airbags, ensuring peace of mind with every drive.
