Volvo EM90 Begins Mass Production In China As A Rebadged Zeekr 009

The first of the Volvo EM90 luxury MPVs has already rolled off the production line too

Chinese automaker and partner to our first local carmaker, Geely, has officially started the mass production of Swedish automaker Volvo’s first luxury MPV, the EM90. It is a rebadge of the Zeekr 009 MPV and so far, will only be available in China for USD115,000 (about RM548,263). It will also begin deliveries in March this year.

The Volvo EM90 was launched in China on 12 November 2023 and is built on Geely’s SEA platform that underpins the Polestar 4, Lotus Eletre and Emeya which is now slightly upgraded and called the EPA, Jiyue 01, Smart #1, Smart #3, and every Zeekr model as well. This means that one who buys this car can rest easy knowing it is stable as can be.

Moreover, the Volvo EM90 measures 5,206mm in length, 2,024mm in width and 1,859mm in height and has a wheelbase of 3,205mm. It has six seats in a 2+2+2 layout and 21 Bowers & Wilkins speakers. The powertrain comprises a 200-kW electric motor on the rear axle powered by a 116-kWh battery for 738km of CLTC range.

Basically, the Volvo EM90 is a rebadged Zeekr 009 MPV with a polished interior and an adjusted exterior. However, the Zeekr’s minivan offers 4WD for 400 kW and a starting price of 500,000 yuan (70,400 USD). This essentially means that the EM90 gives customers in China slightly less car for a much higher price.

On 6 February 2024, the Volvo EM90 officially rolled off the production line in China, marking the start of its mass production. The Swedish automaker shared photos from the assembly line and stated that the MPV accelerates the comprehensive electrification transformation of the brand.

On top of that, Geely’s Hangzhou Bay plant in China manufactures the Volvo EM90 alongside the Zeekr 009, Zeekr 001, Zeekr 001 FR, Jiyue 01, and Polestar 4. This plant’s peak capacity is about 300,000 units per year. Last year, the Zeekr 001 electric liftback made 90 percent of its daily production rate. Now, the model line of this factory has become way more diverse.

The Volvo EM90 is based on a Chinese car and is being assembled at a Chinese factory and Volvo plans to start the deliveries of the Volvo EM90 MPV in March this year. There is no information about its overseas release but that should be announced soon.
