0CATL EV Battery Promises 15 Year, 1.5 Million Km Life
Will this CATL EV battery help EVs retain their value in the second hand market?
Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Ltd (CATL), a prominent Chinese battery manufacturer, has introduced a groundbreaking electric bus battery designed for exceptional longevity. The newly launched Tianxing B-series battery boasts a remarkable lifespan of 15 years, equating to an impressive 932,000 miles (1.5 million km) of use.
This innovation positions CATL as a leader in the electric bus sector, catering specifically to the industry’s unique energy storage needs. One of the standout features of the Tianxing B-series battery is its robust water resistance. With an IP69 rating, the battery can endure 72 hours of immersion in water, ensuring durability and reliability in diverse operating conditions.
Moreover, this resilience is a significant advantage for electric buses that often face varying weather scenarios. As part of its strategic expansion into the commercial vehicle market, CATL has established collaborations with 13 vehicle manufacturers, paving the way for the potential mass production of the Tianxing B-series.
In July, CATL also launched its commercial vehicle battery brand, Tectrans, which encompasses the new B-series along with two other L-series batteries tailored for the logistics and distribution sectors. Among these, one variant supports supercharging technology, achieving a 60 percent charge in just 12 minutes, while another focuses on long-range capabilities.
On top of that, this concerted effort underscores CATL’s determination to dominate the commercial battery market, following its success with passenger vehicle batteries. The Tianxing B-series is engineered with advanced technologies, including CTP (Cell to Pack) 3.0, which optimises grouping efficiency and significantly enhances energy density, rated at 175 Wh/kg.
This sets a new standard in the electric bus industry, promising improved performance and operational efficiency. The battery also features a dual-layer large-surface liquid cooling system, promoting efficient thermal management while reducing overall battery weight.
What’s more, CATL’s commitment to innovation is evident through its focus on four key areas, super safety, super-fast charging, super-long service life, and super-long range, all of which align with the evolving needs of commercial vehicle users.
Wu Kai, CATL’s chief scientist, emphasised the importance of enhancing user experience as the commercial vehicle industry enters a new development phase. By embracing open innovation and technological advancements, CATL aims to deliver substantial value enhancements and drive the future of the electric bus market.
