The Chery Exlantix won China’s car of the year but it is actually different from an EV
The Chery Exlantix, recently named China’s Car of the Year, is revolutionizing the automotive industry with its innovative design and performance. While many vehicles in the market are full-electric vehicles (EVs), the Exlantix stands out as an EREV (Extended Range Electric Vehicle), so what’s the difference?

Well, this unique vehicle combines both electric and petrol power to deliver outstanding efficiency and range, setting it apart from traditional electric cars. The Chery Exlantix features a dual-motor setup, with one electric motor positioned at the front and another at the back. So unlike a full electric car, an EREV actually also utilises a petrol engine as well.
Moreover, the petrol engine, a 1.5-liter turbocharged petrol engine, does not directly drive the wheels. Instead, it functions solely as a generator, providing power to recharge the batteries when needed, similar to the Nissan E-Power system. This approach ensures that the vehicle can run purely on electricity for most daily driving, while the petrol engine acts as a backup.

The Exlantix’s batteries can be customized with a capacity of up to 100kWh, offering an impressive range. With its 41kWh battery, the vehicle provides an electric driving range of about 241km. When the petrol engine kicks in, the car can achieve a total driving range of up to 1,741 km (CLTC), making it ideal for long journeys and minimizing the need for frequent recharging.
One of the key benefits of the Exlantix’s powertrain setup is also its efficiency. The petrol engine operates at a remarkable 45 percent efficiency, ensuring that fuel is used effectively. Unlike traditional vehicles, the gearbox is not connected to the petrol engine, allowing for a more seamless integration of the electric motors and generator.

On top of that, this setup results in a smoother driving experience and better overall performance. With a 67-liter fuel tank, the petrol engine alone can cover a driving distance of around 1,500 km, making long-distance travel convenient and practical. The Exlantix combines the best of both worlds by offering EV sustainability and the security of a petrol engine for extended travel.

The Chery Exlantix demonstrates that the future of sustainable driving doesn’t have to rely solely on EVs. Its innovative EREV design offers a perfect balance between efficiency, range, and practicality, making it a game-changer in the automotive industry.
