Chery QQ Domi: Affordable EV Hatchback Could Stir Malaysian Market—If Price Floor Doesn’t Stop It

Chery has just launched the all-new QQ Domi, a compact electric hatchback targeted at urban drivers seeking a budget-friendly yet practical EV. Priced from just 59,900 yuan (approx. RM38,600) for the base 305 km range model and 69,900 yuan (approx. RM45,100) for the longer-range 405 km version, the QQ Domi undercuts many competitors in China’s hotly contested small EV market.

However, Malaysia’s current RM100,000 minimum price floor for imported electric vehicles could stand in the way of local buyers enjoying this budget EV at its intended price point. Under current guidelines, the QQ Domi would require significant local assembly or feature upgrades to justify the mark-up, unless exceptions are granted.

In terms of design and practicality, the QQ Domi punches well above its weight. Measuring 3,720 mm long and 1,700 mm wide, it’s similar in footprint to a Perodua Myvi, but fully electric. It’s powered by a 40 kW front-mounted motor producing 110 Nm of torque, with a top speed of 100 km/h—more than adequate for city commutes.

The base model includes a 28.5 kWh LFP battery good for 305 km of range, while the long-range variant offers 405 km on a 39.33 kWh pack. Both versions support fast charging (30%–80% in about 30 minutes), while the 405 km model adds VTOL capability, allowing the car to power small appliances—ideal for camping or emergency use.

Inside, Chery offers a youthful yet functional cabin with features like a 10.25-inch central touchscreen, 7-inch digital instrument cluster, voice control, remote app access, and 60/40 split-folding rear seats. Despite the compact exterior, the 2,520 mm wheelbase maximises interior space, making it surprisingly roomy for a microcar.

Should Chery decide to bring the QQ Domi to Malaysia, it could appeal strongly to young urbanites, first-time EV buyers, and those seeking a second car—provided it can stay close to its Chinese price tag. Without localisation or assembly, the RM100,000 threshold might force Chery to position it above key value competitors like the BYD Dolphin and GWM Ora Good Cat.

Nonetheless, if CKD production or government policy exemptions are pursued, the QQ Domi could be a game-changing entrant into Malaysia’s growing affordable EV segment. With rising interest in compact, efficient EVs, Chery has an opportunity to repeat its global success story here.
