Bugatti W16 Mistral ‘Le Retour du Jeune Prince’ Is The First Post-Porsche Vehicle Shown

Bugatti Sur Mesure Completes One-of-One W16 Mistral Commission, the first since the brand was offloaded by Porsche Holdings.

Bugatti has officially delivered its latest customized hyper sports car via its Sur Mesure personalization program. The one-of-one roadster, designated as the W16 Mistral ‘Le Retour du Jeune Prince’ (The Return of the Young Prince), was developed following an extensive design process initiated in October 2023 at the brand’s headquarters in Molsheim, France. This is the first vehicle shown after the sale of Porsche Holdings’ stake in Bugatti.

The vehicle serves as a direct technical and aesthetic tribute to a literary work authored by the commissioning customer. The book itself was conceived as a continuation of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s historical novel, Le Petit Prince. Consequently, the vehicle’s specific configuration incorporates structural and visual motifs based on themes of lunar light, Earth, and stellar constellations.

Bespoke Exterior Metallurgy and Aerodynamic Details

To meet the specific requirements of the commission, Bugatti’s paint specialists developed a dedicated, highly metallic colorway composed of copper and bronze hues. This custom finish was engineered to interact with the roadster’s sculptural surfaces under varying environmental lighting conditions.

The vehicle retains the signature structural architecture of the W16 Mistral but introduces several distinct material variations:

  • Front Grille Integration: The internal lines of the 3D horseshoe grille were re-engineered to realign with the upward airflow patterns of the front hood.
  • Precious Metals: The perimeter outline of the front Bugatti Macaron emblem is finished in genuine gold accents.
  • Chassis Hardware: The vehicle features copper-finished brake calipers and matching copper “EB” center emblems on each wheel.
  • Layered Graphics: The rear flanks and upper surfaces of the active rear wing feature a physical constellation of silver stars applied manually through a multi-layered paint process.
  • Active Aero Artwork: When the rear air brake mechanically deploys during high-speed deceleration, it exposes a hidden graphic reinterpreting a scene from the original Saint-Exupéry text representing the prince and the fox.

Interior Architecture and Material Specification

The cabin of the W16 Mistral has been configured with a two-tone leather layout intended to mirror the exterior color theme. The primary interior choices consist of Terre d’Or (a light, luminous tan leather) and Driftwood (a darker, grounding brown leather).

The thematic design is executed across several cabin interfaces through specific upholstery techniques:

  • Door Panels: The Terre d’Or leather door cards feature custom embroidered leather inlays depicting the moon, surrounded by precision-stitched star motifs.
  • Headrests: Constellation patterns are stitched directly into the leather surfaces of the headrests.
  • Center Console: Specialized star details are inlaid directly into the structure’s brown-carbon fiber weave.
  • Gear Shifter Element: The interior of the gear selector assembly houses a miniature silver rose. Mechanically, this component was created using a 3D scan of a physical flower, which was subsequently downscaled and sculpted into an exact miniature metallic replica.

The mechanical underpinnings of the roadster remain unchanged, utilizing Bugatti’s quad-turbocharged 8.0-litre W16 engine configuration, which was supposed to be retired due to emissions regulations some years ago. As a finalized Sur Mesure project, this vehicle represents a permanent archival entry in Bugatti’s portfolio of factory-customized units.
