Just last month, May 2026, a team from the Chinese Academy of Sciences announced a breakthrough in solid-state battery technology, successfully developing a new type of solid-state lithium-metal battery.
The battery achieves an energy density of 451.5 Wh/kg which is more than twice that of current mainstream electric vehicle batteries and can be fully charged in approximately three (3) minutes.
After 700 charge-discharge cycles, it still retains 81.9% of its original capacity. The research team employed a compatible solvent plasticisation strategy, broadening the range of plasticiser combinations and addressing the insufficient stability of conventional solid electrolytes.
This new approach enhances electrolyte stability and forms a protective layer at the electrode interface, reducing side reactions and thereby improving both charging speed and cycle life. Using a solid electrolyte, the battery is less prone to short circuits or thermal runaway compared to traditional liquid-based batteries and has already passed stringent safety tests, including nail penetration tests.
However, please take note that the technology remains at the laboratory stage and has not yet entered mass production or commercial application.
Meanwhile, we know that BYD is leading the charge with the unveiling of its groundbreaking 5-minute flash charge technology in March 2025, the company is pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in EV charging.
Imagine pulling up to a charging station, plugging in, and within five minutes, gaining 400 kilometers (250 miles) of range. This innovation rivals the refueling speed of traditional gas-powered cars, eliminating one of the biggest concerns for potential EV adopters, charging time.
As the automotive world shifts toward electrification, BYD’s flash charge technology is poised to be a game-changer. In this comprehensive guide, we’ll break down what this technology is, how it works, and why it marks a pivotal moment for the EV industry. Whether you’re an EV enthusiast, a prospective buyer, or simply curious about the future of transportation, here’s your ultimate guide to BYD’s electrifying leap forward.
