BMW in China has a massive recall campaign for a number of vehicles for 3 main issues. The coordinated actions affect more than 150,000 passenger cars and SUVs across both imported and locally manufactured product lines. The remedial measures are being deployed in stages—effective immediately for software-related brake booster glitches, and commencing on 30 October 2026 for hardware-related starter motor fire hazards. All remedy procedures will be carried out free of charge to vehicle owners through authorized BMW retail networks, involving hardware replacements with revised starter components or complete reflashing of onboard control units.
In Malaysia, exposure to these recalls are minimal. That being said, there are things to note of if you’re a BMW owner in Malaysia.
- Starter Motor Campaign (B48 / B58 ICE Engines): The starter-motor degradation issue spans B48 2.0L four-cylinder and B58 3.0L six-cylinder powertrains globally. BMW Group Malaysia issued statements regarding earlier global starter recalls affecting local G20 3 Series, G30 5 Series, and G01/G05 X-series models. Local authorized dealer networks handle these via chassis VIN-specific service campaigns.
- Integrated Brake System (IBS / DSCi): The brake-by-wire module (supplied by Continental) affected over 1.5 million vehicles worldwide. Malaysian-delivered units of the G60 5 Series, G70 7 Series, and modern X models utilize this same brake module, which is governed by BMW’s separate global IBS campaign rather than China-specific CBU import logistics.
Malaysian owners of petrol-powered 2, 3, 4, 5, or X-series models from the 2020–2024 model years should check their vehicle status directly via the BMW ConnectedDrive portal or have an authorized BMW Malaysia service center verify their 17-digit VIN.
Starter Motor Manufacturing Defect Affects 93,071 Imported Vehicles In China
The single largest campaign under the filing targets starter motor reliability across imported luxury nameplates:
- Recall Code: S2026M0091V
- Commencement Date: 30 October 2026
- Affected Vehicles: 93,071 imported units, covering the BMW 2 Series, 4 Series, 5 Series, 6 Series, X4, X5, X6, and Z4 produced between 22 February 2021 and 29 April 2025.
- The Safety Defect: Internal manufacturing variances within the starter motor can cause premature mechanical wear and electrical degradation over repeated ignition cycles. Beyond causing hesitation or complete vehicle starting failure, high electrical resistance within the unit can induce severe local overheating, posing an engine compartment fire risk under extreme circumstances.
- Remedy: BMW service technicians will inspect and replace the affected starter motor assembly with an improved, heavy-duty specification.
Relay Waterproofing Defect Covers 57,787 Domestic and Imported Models
Two interconnected campaigns address water ingress liabilities surrounding the engine starter relay:
- Recall Code S2026M0092V: Affects 57,423 domestically produced BMW 5 Series sedans manufactured by BMW Brilliance between 11 December 2017 and 28 August 2020.
- Recall Code S2026M0093V: Covers 364 imported BMW 7 Series flagship sedans manufactured between 29 June 2016 and 18 January 2018.
- The Safety Defect: The engine starter relay on these models features insufficient sealing and waterproofing. During prolonged wet-weather driving or water wading, moisture intrusion into the relay casing can cause internal terminal corrosion and electrical short circuits, creating potential fire hazards.
- Remedy: Authorised service centres will replace the starter relay assemblies with properly sealed, waterproofed components starting 30 October 2026.
Immediate Re-Recall for DSCi Integrated Brake Booster Software
The remaining two campaigns are immediate corrective actions to resolve incomplete updates from prior service campaigns:
- Recall Code S2026M0094V: Covers 157 locally manufactured BMW X1, X5, and 5 Series models assembled between 15 May 2023 and 30 April 2024.
- Recall Code S2026M0095V: Involves 61 imported units, including the BMW X2, X6, X7, 5 Series, 7 Series, and MINI JCW Countryman built between 6 July 2022 and 25 June 2024.
- The Software Defect: During previous recall campaigns, operational execution errors or data transmission anomalies during vehicle flashing may have compromised the onboard programming. As a result, the early warning safety function for the integrated brake booster (DSCi) could fail to trigger or alert the driver in the event of an impending braking system fault.
- Remedy: Effective immediately, BMW is reinstalling and validating the onboard diagnostic software to ensure the DSCi system’s fault-detection alerts function as intended.

BMW is contacting impacted registered owners directly via mail and telephone notifications. Drivers operating BMW models matching the specified production windows can also check their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) through the SAMR recall database or contact their local authorized dealer to confirm campaign eligibility and schedule service appointments.
