The man behind the shape of the iconic Mazda Miata has passed away.

Tom Matano, the legendary automotive designer best known for creating the original Mazda MX-5 Miata, passed away on September 20, 2025, at the age of 76. News of his death was confirmed by the Miata Reunion, an event he passionately supported, and by a San Francisco hospital.

Born in Nagasaki in 1947, Matano began his career in engineering before moving to the United States in 1970 to study automotive design at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. His early career included stints at General Motors’ Oldsmobile division, Holden in Australia, and BMW in Germany, where he briefly contributed to the E36 3 Series. However, it was at Mazda’s North American design studio in Irvine, California, that Matano found his true calling.

In 1983, he joined Mazda and spearheaded the design of what would become one of the most beloved sports cars of all time: the MX-5 Miata. Drawing inspiration from lightweight European roadsters like the Lotus Elan and Alfa Romeo Spider, Matano helped turn the Miata from a concept into a cultural icon. His vision went beyond just building a car—he wrote a multi-generational plan to ensure the Miata would evolve while staying true to its core philosophy of driving joy.

Matano also oversaw the design of the third-generation Mazda RX-7, widely regarded as one of the most beautiful Japanese cars ever made. His philosophy of timeless, driver-focused design resonated not only with enthusiasts but also with fellow designers worldwide.

Beyond Mazda, Matano dedicated himself to education. After leaving the company in 2002, he became Executive Director of the School of Industrial Design at San Francisco’s Academy of Art University, mentoring countless students until his retirement earlier this year.

Respected for his humility and accessibility, Matano remained an active figure in the automotive community. He was a frequent guest at Miata Reunions, judged prestigious events like Pebble Beach Concours, and left his personal touch on countless enthusiasts’ cars.

His enduring legacy lives on in the million-plus Miatas sold globally, the timeless RX-7, and in the many students and enthusiasts inspired by his work. For those who knew him, Matano’s influence was more than design—it was passion, kindness, and a belief in always staying inspired.
