China’s sodium-ion battery market is expected to reach USD1.56 billion By 2027
A report on China Sodium-ion Battery Report Industry Market Report 2023-2027 predicts that China’s sodium-ion battery production is projected to reach 27 GWh by 2027, nearly four times the 7.1 GWh in 2025.
The market value is expected to reach USD1.569 billion in 2027, a 3.66-fold increase from $428 million in 2025. BYD and CATL are projected to account for 36.3% of the Chinese market in 2027, with BYD producing 4.6 GWh and CATL producing 5.2 GWh.
Sodium-ion batteries are rechargeable batteries that use sodium ions (Na⁺) as the charge carrier. China’s sodium-ion battery production capacity is projected to reach 76 GWh by 2027, with BYD and CATL expected to account for 39.48% of the combined market share.
In 2025, Veken Technology held the largest market share at 15.49%, but with continued investment from BYD and CATL, its market share is expected to decline to 12.96% by 2027.
Sodium-ion batteries will be widely used in energy storage, new energy vehicles, and digital products in the future. Sodium battery cathode materials include polyanionic cathode materials, layered oxide cathode materials, and Prussian cathode materials, with polyanionic and layered oxide cathode materials dominating the market.
Currently, the energy density of sodium-ion batteries is generally 130-175 Wh/kg, lower than that of lithium-ion batteries (ternary lithium approximately 250 Wh/kg, lithium iron phosphate approximately 180 Wh/kg).
EV Battery Company News:
1. CATL has signed a cooperation agreement with Ronbay Technology, making Ronbay its primary supplier of sodium battery cathode powder. Ronbay Technology has a deep presence in the sodium battery cathode material field and expects to reach a production capacity of 1 million tons of sodium battery cathode materials by 2029.
2. Veken Technology currently has a sodium battery production capacity of 2GWh and plans to add 3GWh through expansion projects, bringing its total capacity to 5GWh in the future to meet growing market demand.
3. BYD has launched the “MCCube-SIBESS” sodium-ion battery energy storage product with a capacity of 2.3MWh, expected to be available in the third quarter of 2025.
