BYD is exploring the possibility of entering Formula 1. Recently, former Red Bull team principal Christian Horner appeared at a BYD event in Cannes, France, sparking speculation about a potential collaboration between him and BYD. Both Li Ke, Executive Vice President of BYD, and Chairman Wang Chuanfu have already met with Horner.
A factory team from BYD, guided by Horner, could bring fresh energy, innovative ideas, and even more intense racing to the track. Fans are already imagining the possibilities, and this groundwork signals the start of something that could change the sport for the better which will be a thrilling new chapter that is just getting started.
meanwhile, Li Ke stated that BYD has already held discussions with Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali regarding participation in the series. Horner’s non-compete clause with Red Bull will expire in July 2025, and he is currently working with investors to acquire a 24 percent stake in the Alpine F1 Team held by U.S.-based investment firm OtroCapital.
Additionally, Mercedes-Benz has also expressed interest in this equity stake. Flavio Briatore, Executive Advisor to Alpine, confirmed that three to four potential buyers are involved in the bidding process. Alpine is currently approximately 75 percent owned by the Renault Group and possesses full F1 entry rights and infrastructure. With the implementation of new F1 regulations for the 2026 season, such teams have become focal points for investor interest. FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem has expressed openness to welcoming Chinese automakers into the sport.
