The bZ4X Name Explained
So what does bZ4X mean? Well the name breaks down into two meanings: ‘bZ’ explains the nature of this battery-electric vehicle by going ‘Beyond Zero’ emissions and 4X is defining it as a compact crossover SUV, where its numerical digit shared with the Toyota RAV4 which is almost the same size.
On April 2nd this year, Toyota Malaysia launched the bZ4X to deliver a class best electrified vehicle to Malaysians at just RM220,000.
The bZ4X is Toyota’s first all-new battery electric vehicle (BEV). It breaks new ground in launching the company’s bZ “Beyond Zero” sub-brand of zero emission models and in bringing genuine SUV off-road driving capability to the BEV market for the first time. Its introduction will accelerate Toyota’s multi-technology path towards its goal of carbon neutrality.
The bZ4X’s quality and performance are founded on Toyota’s world-leading experience in electrified vehicle technology, a heritage that spans more than a quarter of a century. The company has also worked with Subaru as its development partner for bZ4X, benefiting from the manufacturer’s renowned expertise in areas such as all-wheel drive engineering.
This electric vehicle carries Toyota’s legendary reputation for durability and offers extensive after-sales support and warranties, which is a major perk compared to newer EV only startups.

The bZ4X Powertrain
The variant for Malaysians comes with a single, front-mounted motor powered by a 73.1 kWh lithium-ion battery producing 224hp and 269Nm of torque. Driving range at best is 525km and if you are using a DC fast-charger (max 150 kW), you can reach an 80% charge in approximately 30 minutes (yes, the competition has halved this but this is after all a Toyota).
It accelerates from standstill to 100km/h in just 7.5 seconds which is enough for the average family driver. Yes, there are some other EV’s with faster acceleration and we have seen many end up in longkangs and hitting shop lots as drivers have issues with the very quick acceleration (under 5 seconds).
Did you know that Toyota has engineered the battery to last? Toyota Malaysia offers a 8-year warranty from the date of first registration with unlimited mileage for BEV battery, inverter and BEV ECU. Optionally, this Battery Electric warranty can be extended for another 2 years (9th & 10th year).

The bZ4X Drive
Built on the e-TNGA platform and weighing in at just 2,520kg, it offers very good ride comfort, a planted stance, and a well-weighted suspension that absorbs road imperfections effortlessly. The cabin has a high quality feel and material finish …… almost like with a Lexus model …… NX in particular.
Unlike highly minimalist EVs, it features physical climate controls and an easy-to-use infotainment setup (including a 14-inch display) that doesn’t require a steep learning curve to operate and it features wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a learning voice recognition for simple functions.
The extended wheelbase provides ample rear legroom for 3 average adults, a reclining back seat, and a spacious, airy feel with ample headroom. It comes standard with the comprehensive Toyota Safety Sense suite, featuring highly capable adaptive cruise control and lane departure assist.
