It looks like the quick arrival of a tow truck to an accident scene is not some kind of magic or plain luck, instead it is a combination of financial incentive, localised monitoring, and aggressive positioning along common accident prone stretched to road.
While police officers and paramedics/ambulance are dispatched systematically through emergency response networks, tow truck drivers often act with independent, highly motivated “first spotters” that are rewarded handsomely.
So How They Beat Ambulances And Police To The Accident Scenes?
Tow truck drivers routinely listen to unencrypted police, fire, and EMS scanner frequencies or regional traffic incident feeds. The moment a 911 dispatcher broadcasts a call, drivers within the accident range will immediately rush to the scene, more often moving before the actual emergency units are even out of the station.
In our crowded cities the first tow truck on scene gets the job (or a massive commission/referral fee from workshop/bodyshop). This creates intense competition, driving operators to speed directly toward the accident scene.
There are many (not all) tow truck operators spend their downtime parked at major highway on-ramps (federal Highway is a good example), dangerous intersections or roadside areas.
This is because they are already mobile and distributed across key traffic points, they are often physically closer to an accident than a police car or ambulance stationed some distance away.
Tow drivers rely on CB radios, traffic apps (like Waze), taxi/rideshare tips, or dedicated local “spotters” who alert them to collisions in exchange for healthy cash kickbacks.
Unsolicited tow trucks that show up unannounced at a crash scene (often called “bandit” or scammers) can charge predatory rates or take vehicles to unauthorised car repair shops where insurance claims can be sometimes as high as 200% or even more of the actual repair costs.
Unless dispatched through a police rotation or your roadside assistance/insurance provider, exercise caution before letting anyone hook up your vehicle to a tow truck.
