VW Golf Drop Top Is Back!
It’s back and despite the global success of the EOS, VW marketers are certain that the Mk6 Golf cabrio is going to ring in huge sales as its predecessors did.
Volkswagen AG has released the first photos of the 2011 Golf Cabriolet, prior to its official launch at the 2011 Geneva motor show next week and we have to say that this version somehow does not have an evergreen look to it like the 1st Golf cabrio did……see picture below.
There hasn’t been a Golf soft-top since 2002, and that car was a Mk3 Golf (pictured below) which saw less than a handful coming into Malaysia due to its rather dowdy looks and uninspiring drive.
Previous Golf Cabriolets have sported a prominent rollover bar, for the Mk6 edition, Volkswagen has installed a pop-up rollover protection system, as found on the Eos, New Beetle and Audi A3 cabriolets. The system deploys in milliseconds, and allows the 2011 Golf Cabriolet to dispense with one of its predecessors’ visual hallmarks.
You’ll also notice that the convertible roof hides nearly flush with the body in the latest Golf convertible. That soft-top is now electrically operated as standard, and can switch from fresh-air to fully enclosed in 9.5 seconds.
You can even go topless at speeds up to 18mph. To ensure the driving experience matches the sharpness of the hatchback, and remains free of scuttle shake, VW has reinforced the side sills, doors and chassis crossmembers.
The stronger underbody has also been tuned to enhance refinement to the extent that bosses claim it “sets new standards for acoustics in a convertible”.
Malaysia will probably get the 2.0-litre Turbo DSG version and asking price will be interesting as it will have to sit between the EOS and the GTI……..some might say this will too close in pricing strategy.
