Chevron advise; use fuel recommended by your vehicle manufacturer, not costlier RON97 fuel unnecessarily

Chevron Malaysia Limited (“Chevron”), which operates the retail brand Caltex™, today reminded consumers to use fuel with octane ratings recommended by their vehicle manufacturer, as some still chose to use higher-priced RON97 fuel despite more cost-effective RON95 fuel being within the recommended octane rating range for their vehicles. With RON97 fuel now being sold at RM2.90 per liter, RM1 more than the RM1.90 per liter price of RON95 fuel, consumers will be able to avoid unnecessary expenditure by choosing fuel with the appropriate octane rating for their vehicle.

“Chevron’s main concern is for consumers to select a fuel that best meets their driving and vehicle requirements,” said Jeremy Oh, Country Chairman, Chevron Malaysia Limited. To ensure maximized cost savings, consumers are reminded to refer to the Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) recommendation in respective vehicle manuals or check the back of the vehicle petrol filler lid for the recommended Research Octane Number (RON) rating.
“If your recommended vehicle requirement is RON95, it makes the most money sense to adhere to this – getting a quality fuel that fits your needs. Using RON products greater than your engine requirement may not necessarily be the best for your engine, nor does it guarantee better performance,” added Oh.
With reference to misperceptions of power loss when choosing a lower RON product, Oh clarified that an engine’s octane number requirement is defined as the octane number fuel that will produce the first signs of detectable knock (abnormal combustion) under the most severe speed and load conditions. As such, the harder one drives, the higher the engine’s octane number requirement.
“If you drive normally, avoiding wide open throttle acelerations, your engine’s octane number requirement will be lower than if you drive aggressively. Other factors, such as an inefficient cooling system or combustion chamber deposits, can also increase an engine’s octane number requirement. In such situations, a higher RON fuel is required if you want to enjoy better performance,” said Oh.
Caltex Premium 95 with Techron® and Premium 97 with Techron® fuels contain the exclusive and patented fuel system cleaning ingredient, Techron®, which is technologically advanced and specially formulated for superior fuel system deposit control and cleanliness.
“Chevron continuously strives to ensure that we provide our customers with high quality products that enable them to get the best out of their vehicles and the fuel they use. High quality fuel such as Caltex with Techron® contains effective deposit control additives that clean your fuel system as you drive while minimizing harmful combustion chamber deposits, so that the car and its driver can perform at their best,” said Oh.
Caltex Premium 95 with Techron® and Premium 97 with Techron® is available at more than 400 Caltex service stations nationwide.
