Volkswagen Going Electric In 2 Years
Sometime in 2013 or 2014, the Volkswagen Group will present several significant models that make use of plug-in hybrid technology, according to its Chairman Martin Winterkorn. Volkswagen is aiming to spearhead the electric car technology, which it believes, will affect the future of individual mobility in critical ways. Winterkorn said that the plug-in hybrid has “great potential” in the mid-term since it merges the “best of two worlds.”
Winterkorn didn’t specify what models will benefit from the technological revisions but we can make our own conclusions as VW has formerly displayed prototypes of a Golf-based TwinDrive plug-in hybrid and an Audi A5 e-tron. Potential customers will be delighted to know that the plug-in hybrid gives them the performance from an internal combustion engine performance along with the ranges that are well-suited to daily driving.
In addition, Winterkorn said that the vehicle’s speed, climbing or towing abilities are not limited in any way. He also emphasized that consumers can significantly reduce CO2 emissions level, which he says is a big issue for carmakers that sell in Europe. Winterkorn said that the automotive industry as well as the European industrial community looks at electric mobility as the “task of the century.” Winterkorn made his announcement at the Vienna Motor Symposium Volkswagen where it unveiled two new engines that will be offered very soon. These include the 1.4-liter TSI Motor E 85 and the new 2.0-liter TDI, which complies with the strict BIN5/ULEV emission laws in the US.
In a VW Passat, the combination of the new TSI with a seven-speed dual clutch transmission in E 85 operation yields a fuel consumption value of 26.6 (US mpg) in the NEDC driving cycle, which is equivalent to 144 g/km of CO2. This represents a seven per cent reduction in CO2 emissions compared to an engine operated with Super gasoline. The engine is earmarked for use in the Passat and Passat CC, initially in Sweden and Finland, where E 85 fuel has been widely available for many years now. The second generation 2.0-liter TDI has been re-engineered for the Passat to satisfy BIN5/ULEV emission regulations including a SCR (selective catalytic reduction) emissions control system.
The 2.0-liter TDI produces 138 bhp has 236 lb.-ft. of torque, accelerates the Passat to 60 mph in 9.3 seconds with an electronically limited top speed of 113 mph. The diesel fuel economy is 29 US mpg.
