0ZF Has A 9-Speed Gearbox Ready
Well informed car buyers in Malaysia now look for at least a 6-speed gearbox in the cars they buy. Those with little information are easily convinced by smart talking salespeople and they will accept a 4-speed gearbox when near competitor’s offer 5 and 6-speed gearboxes that assist in better fuel consumption in more modern cars. Now comes news that the world leader in gearbox manufacturing, ZF, has created a nine-speed gearbox. Some expensive car manufacturers today like Lexus already come equipped with 8-speed gearboxes and VW has a 6-speed in most of its mainstream models. Citroen has just introduced a 6-speed C5 sedan in Malaysia. All this points to a market looking for more gears to provide better fuel efficiency and power delivery. ZF says that their new 9-speed gearbox has been designed to handle power of between 200lb-ft to 353lb-ft and it works for front wheel drive vehicles with transverse engines. We should be seeing this new gearbox by late next year.
