Porsche Carrera Cup Asia 2011 – Rounds 5 & 6, Ordos International Circuit, July 8-10

Team Jebsen driver Rodolfo Avila won his first race of the 2011 PCCA season as the Macau driver asserted himself on the 3.751km Ordos International Circuit, securing his victory with an impressive 3.863 second margin and becoming the new championship points’ leader. LKM Racing driver Darryl O’Young finished second in Round 6, with Team StarChase driver Alexandre Imperatori taking an impressive third, after starting from ninth on the grid. Woyo Racing driver Davide Rizzo won his second Class B race of the weekend, after capitalizing on a last lap error by then-leader Wang Jian Wei of Team BetterLife. Wang, the current Class B leader, finished second, with Modena Motorsport driver Wayne Shen third, reaching the podium for the second time this season.
With five straight podium finishes prior to his first win since the 2009 Porsche Carrera Cup Asia season, Avila’s consistency has paid off handsomely and the 24-year driver now leads the championship for the first time in his career. However, Avila will not be able rest on his laurels; just one point separates him from the Shanghai-based Swiss driver Imperatori, who until today led the championship. O’Young’s LKM Racing teammate Keita Sawa is third in the championship a further 14 points behind. With the results of Round 5 determining the grid order for Round 6, Sawa was on pole with Avila lining up beside him. Sawa made a clean start and kept his lead, but Avila kept close behind. When Sawa made an error on Turn 14 of the first lap, Avila took advantage and overtook the lead. In Class B, an early error by Rizzo caused him to lose a place to Wang. However, as the race continued, the Italian – in his first Porsche Carrera Cup Asia season – made up the time and soon the two were battling hard for sixth overall and the Class B win. While Wang continued to lead, a mistake on the final corner of the last lap cost him the victory as Rizzo took advantage.
