Volkswagen ‘R’. Not Just Motorsports, Its Street Performance

You might already know what ‘M Power’, AMG and RS means to most car enthusiasts. Most Malaysians have grown up with Nismo, Ralliart, Mugen and TRD. These are tuning divisions of various car companies. Some are completely owned by the car companies and some others are close working partners. Now let me educate you (if you don’t already know) on the ‘R’ division of Volkswagen. The youngest tuning arm of the car market, ‘R’ started as motorsports tuning division of Volkswagen to get their vehicles ready for Paris Dakar and Cup racing events. Now this division has produced some interesting road cars that have a sporting DNA without being too complicated to own and operate. First came the highly successful Golf R32 with VW’s 4-Motion system (four wheel drive). Then as the global demand saw many tuning versions of showroom VW’s being taken to extreme levels of performance by private individuals, the good people at ‘R’ have released the new Golf MK6 R32 (four wheel drive) and the Scirocco R32 (front wheel drive). These two performance cars will soon arrive in Malaysia.
The Volkswagen R performance sub-brand isn’t just a niche business of the huge and varied part of the Volkswagen Auto Group. If ‘R’ GmbH’s heads are to be believed, it’s an instrumental component of the German automaker’s push to offer something for everyone. And after speaking with the two men shepherding R into the future, it appears that good things are on the way.
With the Golf R set to go on sale in the Malaysia in the 3rd quarter of next year and R-branded performance parts already proliferating throughout VW’s core products, Ulrich Riestenpatt Richter, R’s Executive Director, and Dr. Hendrik Muth, R’s marketing head, are looking to the future. “The future is diesel and all-wheel-drive,” Richter proudly mentions. That could mean that the next great performance offering from VW R could come in the form of an AWD diesel hatch which essentially means a diesel powered Golf R. Further, Richter contends that he can make an R version of any vehicle in the VW stable, so don’t be surprised to see a Passat R in the coming years and the Beetle R getting the green light (already mentioned at the recent LA Motor Show). So that means more ‘R’ cars are on the way, and partnered with a high-performance diesel powerplant, enthusiasts should be able to have their tire-shredding hot hatch whilst spending less money at the fuel pump in the process.
