MALAYSIAN SUPER SERIES BIKES – REVIEW ROUND 5 VETERANS RULE 2012 SEASON

Bringing back memories of Valentino Rossi wild celebrations with a chicken in Sepang in 2009, the Malaysian Super Series 2012 season, which concluded yesterday, underlined the supremacy of the veteran riders as they continued their rule. While Mohd Syahnas Shahidan, overall winner of the Supersports crown in 2008, collected his first Superbike crown, 35-year old Ahmad Zamani Baharuddin secured his third Superstock title while his younger brother, Ahmad Fuad collected his second Supersport crown after six years.  Delivering a message that ‘old hens can still lay eggs’, Rossi, who was accused by some quarters as already being too old to be competing in top level racing, was joined by his brigade of fans at Turn 7 to celebrate his ninth world crown with a chicken and a big egg that writes 2009 world champion. In denying Yasuhiro Kuhara his fourth crown, Syahnas, who rides for Iktikad Raya, won the 2012 Superbike crown by finishing second in both races at Round 5 today; to collect 40 vital points to take his total haul to 185 against Kuhara’s 165 points. Ahmad Zamani, who had already secured his third Superstock championship at the previous Round 4, added another win in today’s final round and ended the season with 213 points. Nasaruddin Mat Yusof of TWG Racing Team, who took third and second placing today for Race 1 and Race 2 respectively, is vice-champion with a total haul of 156 points. Ahmad Fuad, who started the day second in the overall standings behind Australian teenager Michael Blair, had a drama-filled final round before confirming his second Supersport crown in the series.
The veteran Malaysian rider, who still competes in the Petronas Malaysian Cub Prix Championship and Asian Road Racing Championship, looked like to be cruising to his crown when Blair dropped his bike at Turn 9 during the formation lap after his engine blew. But, in the sighting lap, Fuad crashed in what appeared to be caused by some oil on the track at Turn 7 and immediately complained to the track marshals. All the riders were immediately called in to the parc fermme as track marshals clean the track. Fuad managed second place to collect 20 vital points in that opening race; losing to Muhammad Zamri Baba on the final turn. With another 20 points in Race 2 which was again topped by Zamri, Fuad – the two-time Malaysian Cub Prix expert champion – won his second MSS crown by garnering 156 points. Boosted by his two wins today, Zamri took second overall in the Supersport Open championship with a total haul of 150 points. Blair, who returned for Race 2 where he finished fifth, took the third overall position with 131 points. In the novice classes, former national motocross champion Mohd Al-Amirul Ashshahid marked his debut in track racing with a sensational performance to win the Superstock Championship Class B overall title.

Starting the day in third of the overall standings, Al-Amirul, or better known as Gaban, jumped to the top of the championship ladder by winning the opening race. In a wet second race, Gaban finished fourth to take 13 points and a total haul of 173 points, which was sufficient to give him the overall crown.  Class B for Superbike Championship was won by Robert Barraclough while the overall title for Class B for the 600cc Supersport Championship was won by Shaiful Bahari Abdul Rahman.
