BMW i5 to Take on Tesla Model S?

BMW CEO Harald Krueger recently indicated that the company has noticed there’s room for expansion with regards to electric cars. This of course, refers to the model gap between i3 and i8. He did not indicate what sort of car would fit in the ‘i5’ slot, but sources close to BMW indicate a family sedan.

Due for a 2019 release, the potential electric 4-door from Bavarian Motor Works could be just what the industry needs to keep the electric car momentum going as it represents direct competition to Tesla. Rumours indicate that it will be bigger than the current 3-Series sedan and be offered in all-electric and plug-in hybrid variants.

The electric version of this car will probably be equipped with 2 motors, one at the front that puts out 135hp and one at the rear outputs 225hp. The plug-in hybrid on the other hand might have a 275hp rear-mounted motor paired to either a 3 or 4 cylinder petrol engine. A targeted weight of 1560kg is reported, but expect plenty of carbon fibre construction to keep things dynamic.
