Ford Ranger gets Rear Passenger Seat Belt in U.S.

The Ford Ranger is already one of the safest, best-equipped pick-up trucks available in Malaysia. But in Ford’s home turf, it’s getting yet another update in the safety department. 2019 models will be receiving ”Belt Monitor”, which will alert the driver if any of the second-row passengers unbuckle their seatbelts.

Belt Monitor will be able to identify which of the 3 rear passengers hasn’t got the seatbelts on. A Ford engineer commented that the company was hoping to make Belt Monitor a standard feature on every Ranger.

In Malaysia, cars like the Haval H2 already come with a similar system.

Coincidentally, rival Chevrolet introduced another seatbelt system about a week ahead of Ford in the U.S. too. Their version is called “Buckle to Drive” and it’s aimed at reminding teens to buckle up before driving. It’s a standard feature on their Traverse.

Press Release

The 2019 Ford Ranger isn’t just an off-roading, trailer-towing, high-tech adventure machine, it also boasts some of the smartest seat belts in the business.

To ensure rear seat passengers stay buckled up, every Ford Ranger is equipped with an innovative safety technology called Belt Monitor. The feature alerts the driver if a second row passenger unbuckles and indicates which seat they’re in.

While other seat belt systems only monitor front and rear passengers as the driver initially pulls away, Ranger alerts a driver when any passenger unbuckles while driving. By flagging the specific seat position, the driver can remind occupants to buckle up again.

Ranger’s Belt Monitor is the first rear seat belt reminder system to debut in Ford’s truck lineup. First introduced on the 2018 Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator, Belt Monitor will roll out across the entire North American lineup over the next few years.
