Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 4MATIC AMG Line Now Locally-Assembled
Mercedes-Benz Malaysia presents the first ever locally-assembled GLE 450.
The Mercedes-Benz GLE has been available in Malaysia for generations now. However, it has never been made available in its locally-assembled guise.
That changes today with the introduction of the Pekan made GLE 450 4Matic AMG Line SUV. With local assembly, the price drops from around RM585K to RM475K without SST.
The CKD Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 4Matic AMG Line is quite different from the CBU car we tested last year. This time around, the GLE is equipped with a third row of seats, allowing it to go up against the Volvo XC90 and perhaps even the BMW X7, even though that’s a larger, more upmarket vehicle.
Unfortunately, many major areas have taken a spec drop versus the initial CBU car. The first is the upholstery. The previous model was wrapped in Nappa leather, but this time around, we get Artico synthetic leather and Dinamica synthetic suede inside. The second aspect that sees a downgrade is the advanced driver assist systems (ADAS), which no longer has lane centring assist.
This CKD car still gets the other systems though, such as adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assist and autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection. The CBU car also had E-Active Body Roll Stabilisation, which has been omitted here. Air suspension is still featured though. Finally, there are the rims, which were 22″ 5-split spoke pieces on the CBU car we tested. Now they are 21″ multispoke rims. That is the only difference on the outside as far as we can tell.
Overall, the core of the GLE is still retained. You still get the most used and most useful features. Under the hood, there’s still a potent 3-litre inline 6 motor that sends power to all four wheels via a 9G Tronic automatic gearbox.

With a turbocharged six-cylinder engine generating a thunderous 367hp, the GLE 450 4MATIC AMG Line is powered by a 3.0-litre engine with the extended DYNAMIC SELECT transmission modes. Also, the new SUV is built with the latest developments in the air suspension system AIRMATIC with enhanced damping system ADS, a 9G-TRONIC nine-speed automatic transmission, state-of-the-art driver assistance systems and the new MBUX.
Featuring an AMG Line exterior, the GLE 450 4MATIC AMG Line dials up its expressive and sporty character to the highest level. Its body styling features the iconic diamond radiator grille with chrome pins, sporty aprons all-round with large air inlets, MULTIBEAM LED headlamps and 21-inch AMG multi-spoke light-alloy wheels.
The full-sized luxury SUV features the AIRMATIC package, an adaptive damping system that meets modern air suspension resulting to an intelligent comfort suspension which is able to adjust automatically to the driving conditions, speed and load.
The interior blends luxuriously elegant aesthetics with a progressive character. With the generous amount of space, free-standing elements and the excellent attention to detail the interior conveys exclusivity and wellbeing. Fully digital instruments visually float on a linear-themed dash. Flowing door-to-door and into a console integrating prominent twin grab handles and anthracite open-pore oak wood trim elements.
The GLE features the Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) NTG 6 with two 12.3 widescreen displays that includes a digital touch screen media display. Other class-leading highlights and innovation includes the Burmester Surround Sound System and the well-known favourites like the 64-colour ambient lighting. Third row seating raises the GLE to a seven-seater.
The GLE 450 4MATIC AMG Line is also equipped with best-in-class safety and driving assistance systems including Active Distance DISTRONIC, Blind Spot Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist and a 360-degree camera for all-round visibility.
