Great Wall Motors’ Sales Up 405% Year-On-Year In Australia and New Zealand

Sales of Haval and other GWM vehicles are going up in these two countries.

Great Wall Motors (GWM), one of China’s largest vehicle producers, is on a roll in a couple of export markets nearby. The brand has been expanding their fleet of Haval and GWM branded vehicles in Australia and New Zealand to great success. At the end of August 2021, the group found that its year-on-year sales had expanded in that region by over 400%!

The growth was more precisely measured as 405.3% across the Australian and New Zealand markets, or ANZ Market, as GWM internally refers to it. To be fair, it’s worth noting three factors:

  1. the actual numbers are not very impressive compared to what other brands sell (2,057 in August 2021)
  2. August tends to be an exceptional month of sales in the ANZ market, and things calm down soon after
  3. 2020 was particularly tough for automobile sales, growth is expected
  4. GWM was on a product offensive

On this last point, the ANZ market saw two very impressive Haval SUVs being introduced. The first was the 3rd generation Haval H6, which was the first product to be built on GWM’s L.E.M.O.N platform and is powered by upgraded 1.5L and 2.0L turbocharged petrol motors with hybrid and plug-in hybrid variants available. The Haval H6 went on to sell 693 units in Australia in August 2021, making it the best selling vehicle for the brand.

The 2nd GWM product to be introduced was the Haval JOLION, a slightly smaller SUV that’s also built on the L.E.M.O.N platform. This product replaces the Haval H2 and is powered by a 1.5L turbocharged petrol engine. It sold 516 units in Australia for the month of August 2021, aimed at younger customers.

Further expansion of GWM in Australia and New Zealand

Besides these two recent launches, GWM is expecting to introduce at least two more SUVs to the ANZ market in the coming months.

GWM are also preparing to introduce the ORA brand to the Australian market in 2022 and keep pushing further products and brands to this market. Not bad at all for a company that wasn’t known outside of China just a few years ago.
