PM Announces Free RapidKL Rides For A Month Starting Today

This is in conjunction with the launch of the new Putrajaya MRT line

Beginning today (16 June 2022), all public transportation services under RapidKL including MRT, LRT, BRT, Monorail and the RapidKL bus will be free of charge, for a month.

The announcement was made by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakub at the launch of the first phase of the new Putrajaya MRT Line earlier today. The new line will begin operations today at 3pm.

“I hope every city folk will take this opportunity to try public transport. Leave your vehicles at Park N Ride,” he said.

As for the new Putrajaya MRT Line, the first phase is 17.5 km long and covers 12 stations between Kwasa Damansara and Kampung Batu. Of the total stations, nine of them are new. They are:

  • Damansara Damai
  • Sri Damansara Barat
  • Sri Damansara Sentral
  • Sri Damansara Timur
  • Metro Prima
  • Kepong Baru
  • Jinjang
  • Sri Delima
  • Kampung Batu

The remaining three stations, namely Kwasa Damansara, Kampung Selamat and Sungai Buloh are existing stations and were part of the MRT Kajang Line.

According to The Star, the trains will have an interval of four minutes during peak hours, which is 7am-9am in the morning and 5pm-7.30pm in the evening. Each trip will be capable of ferrying up to 1,200 passengers.

There is no doubt that this move will at least temporarily help alleviate the cost of living and ease the Klang Valley’s traffic woes but what is going to happen when the free ride period ends? As we see it, we could be back to square one if there’s nothing being done about the real issues with our public transport, such as overcrowding, frequent breakdowns, and poor first- and last-mile connectivity, to name a few.
