Volkswagen ID.Aero Concept Car Shown As Global EV Sedan

The Volkswagen ID.Aero has been shown and might end up being their 1st global EV sedan.

When it comes to electric vehicles, not every car maker is starting their journey off with a sedan. Most have decided the crossover form has more appeal, while others, like Nissan and Honda, have hatchbacks serving as their first battery electric vehicles. For Volkswagen, their first few ‘ID’ branded vehicles were a mix of crossovers and hatchbacks, but they’re now ready to venture into other bodystyles. Back in March, they showed the production version of their ID.Buzz electric van. Today, they have revealed the ID.Aero, their first electric sedan.

The Volkswagen ID.Aero is still a concept car for now, but Volkswagen is planing to begin production in Europe and in China starting some time in 2023. The ID.Aero will serve as the company’s flagship electric vehicle in every market where it is offered.

In China specifically, the ID.Aero will be their fourth electric vehicle and there will be two versions built for each of their joint ventures in China. The European version will be built in Emden, Lower Saxony.

As its name suggests, the ID.Aero has an exceptionally aerodynamic design which contributes significantly towards its 620km range. The exact drag coefficient is 0.23 Cd. The 22″ two-tone wheels are designed in the style of a turbine and integrated flush into the wheel housings to contribute to the vehicle’s overall sporty look as well as the its aerodynamics. Illuminated touch surfaces serve as door handles and reduce drag even more.

Volkswagen ID family design cues are present throughout the new ID.Aero. From the honeycomb grille on the lower half of the front end. Higher up, the light strip extends across the face of the car and beyond. IQ.Light LED matrix headlights are present here.

Around back there’s another light strip and this is linked to the front light strip by the illuminated light surfaces around the sides of the car. A new ‘hero colour’ has been selected for the ID.Aero – Polar Light Blue Metallic. This pigment creates a golden shimmer effect in the right lighting. A high-gloss black roof provides some contrast against the vehicle body.

Volkswagen ID.Aero

Like just about every Volkswagen electric vehicle, the ID.Aero is built on the modular electric drive matrix platform (MEB). In this 4-door form, it is 5m long bumper to bumper while also having short overhangs and a long wheelbase for maximum interior room. The lithium ion battery that powers the ID.Aero has a net energy content of 77 kWh.
