Perodua Sends Aid To Longtime Sri Lankan Distributor Amidst Country’s Financial Crisis

Perodua lends a helping hand to their partner since 1995 in Sri Lanka, Unimo Enterprises.

Perodua has been around since 1993 and within 2 years they started working with Unimo Enterprises Limited to distribute their vehicles in Sri Lanka. Unfortunately, the situation in Sri Lanka has deteriorated drastically in the last few years.

Sri Lanka’s financial crisis has meant a freeze in imports since 2020, effectively stopping the sales of Perodua vehicles there. In the past, Sri Lanka was Perodua’s largest CBU export market. Many Sri Lankans are unable to purchase food and daily essentials as the country suffers its 2nd worst economic contraction in history. All this while Perodua is celebrating its best sales year in history almost entirely due to domestic sales.

“The financial crisis in Sri Lanka has also led to livelihood difficulties and we are thankful that we are now able to extend a helping hand to our partners there,” Perodua President and Chief Executive Officer, Dato’ Sri Zainal Abidin Ahmad said.

To help their partners out, Perodua has sent aid to 171 staff members of Unimo Enterprises Limited. The staff members were given shopping vouchers that can be used to purchase daily essentials.

“We choose shopping vouchers as this is the most effective way to assist Unimo staff to get daily essentials and hope that the situation there improves,” Dato’ Sri Zainal said.

Here’s the press release with more.

PRESS RELEASE

Perodua sent aid to the staff of its distributor, Unimo Enterprises Limited, in Sri Lanka as the island nation struggling to recover from an ongoing financial crisis which has seen a freeze in imports since 2020.

This import ban has effectively halted the sale of Perodua vehicles in Sri Lanka, which was previously the compact carmaker’s largest CBU export market. As at the end of 2019, Perodua’s best-selling model in Sri Lanka was the Bezza 1.0L.

Perodua gifted vouchers to 171 Unimo employees as a gesture of assistance during this difficult period.

Unimo Enterprises Limited is Perodua’s distributor in Sri Lanka since the year 1995.
