3rd Generation Mercedes-Benz GLS Model Variants Given A Facelift

The Mercedes-Benz GLS and its various variants have been given a design and tech update.

It’s the time of the year for larger Mercedes-Benz SUVs to get updated. In early February we got a full GLE family refresh and now we’re getting the facelifted GLS models. The GLS family is fairly new for Mercedes-Benz, debuting in its first generation in 2006 as the ‘GL’. The second generation came in 2013 and was renamed to the GLS when this model was facelifted in 2016. The third generation came about in 2020 and came in Benz, AMG and Maybach variants. The 2023 3rd generation facelift models will arrive in showrooms by Q3 in selected markets.

Here are some highlights.

Standard Benz GLS Changes

In terms of looks, the radiator grille has been completely redesigned. There are now four horizontal louvres which are galvanised in the shade ‘Silver Shadow’ for the Benz model. The bumper and faux underguard also have been reshaped with integrated air inlets and high-gloss black surrounds.

The rear light graphics feature a new graphic in the shape of triple blocks in each cluster. New 20″ multi-spoke light alloy wheels in high-sheen Himalayas grey have been added.

Inside, two new leather upholstery colour options have been added – Catalana Beige and Bahia Brown. There are also new trim finishes with Glossy Brown Lime wood finish now standard and Manufaktur glossy black with flowing lines now available on non-Maybach models. Interior air vents are now galvanised in Silver Shadow.

Changes to the Mercedes-Maybach GLS

The Maybach GLS is actually available in Malaysia, so some may be interested in knowing what changes to expect should the facelift be brought in as well. Besides the new taillamp graphic, a set of new 23″ forged Maybach wheels with forged wheel bolt covers have been added to the options list.

Inside, ambient lighting with animated projection of the Mercedes-Maybach pattern has been included as standard. The seat covers have been redesigned with diamond-pattern quilting with specific perforations. New exclusive colour combinations have been added for the interior: Manufaktur crystal white/silver grey pearl and Manufactur mahogany brown/macchiato beige.

Changes To Mercedes-AMG GLS model

Like the other models, the new LED rear lighting graphic is the biggest distinguishing factor. The front section now features the AMG emblem instead of the Mercedes star. Brake callipers are now finished in red and a specific AMG light animation plays through the logo projector. Inside, nappa leather is used for upholstery.

Standard equipment has been upgraded and the new AMG Performance steering wheel is now included. Roll stabilisation and air suspension have been given a software update and a new setup.
