Chery Partners With Inokom For Local Assembly, Reveals Big Plans For Malaysia

Chery revealed their strategy and product rollout for Malaysia and turns out it’s pretty impressive.

At the Malaysia Autoshow 2023, Chery revealed their grand strategy for the Malaysian market. The Chinese car maker signed an agreement with Inokom to use their facilities for local assembly of upcoming models in our market.

Chery Malaysian Product Strategy

For Malaysia, the first two Chery models will be the Omoda 5 and the Tiggo 8 Pro 390T – both powered by ICE powertrains. Later on, Chery plans to introduce the Tiggo 7 Pro PHEV and Tiggo 8 Pro PHEV models. Finally, the Omoda 5 EV and another yet-to-be-named BEV will be introduced.

At the autoshow, we also got to test drive the Omoda 5 and Tiggo 8 Pro as specified for our market. Pricing has still not been confirmed but we’ve been hearing rumours that the mid-spec Omoda 5 C will start around RM108K while the Omoda 5 H will come in below RM120K. The Tiggo 8 Pro 390T might just enter at RM140K. Don’t quote us on these prices, it’s just the numbers that are being floated around.

Showroom Rollout

The brand plans to build 70 showrooms nationwide and 30 of these are already being renovated as we speak. Unfortunately it is unknown what the timeline is for this showroom rollout and also what the spread will be between 2S, 3S and 4S centres.

Grand Plans For Malaysia

Beyond the local market, Chery also plans to use Malaysia as the export hub for right-hand drive markets in the region. This includes Australia, Singapore, Vietnam, Thailand and Brunei. Malaysia will assemble Chery’s ICE, BEV and PHEV models. The company will also set up R&D centres for their RHD product lineup, regional testing, training and parts distribution. What’s more Chery is planning to collaborate with local universities to develop new talent and to research new technologies.

Separate Plans For Indonesia

Indonesia was not named as one of the export markets. It is assumed that Indonesia will also get local assembly for a separate entity. Chery has already outlined separate production and R&D investment plans for Indonesia.
