BMW Sees Its 3 Millionth Electrified Vehicle Roll Off Munich Production Line

BMW has been very serious about its electrification goals and it has proven it again

The BMW Group has marked a major milestone with the production of its three-millionth electrified vehicle. The landmark car, a BMW 330e Touring in Portimao Blue, rolled off the assembly line at the company’s main plant in Munich and is headed for the UK market. In fact, as of 2024, 1 in 4 BMWs was either an EV or a PHEV.

Notably, BMW produces electrified and internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles side-by-side on the same production lines across its global plants, showcasing a high degree of manufacturing flexibility.

Moreover, Milan Nedeljković, BMW Board Member for Production, stated, “Our flexible production system allows us to respond swiftly to changing customer needs and market dynamics. Every plant in our global network is now enabled for electromobility, ensuring our capacity to meet growing demand in this segment.”

BMW began its electric journey into electric mobility in 2013 with the launch of the fully electric BMW i3, produced in Leipzig. The plant also built BMW’s first plug-in hybrid, the i8. Initially, due to the i3’s unique design, it was manufactured in a dedicated section of the plant. However, as technology and demand evolved, BMW gradually evolved.

Today, electromobility also accounts for more than 25 percent of BMW’s production, with the majority being fully electric vehicles. The BMW Group has already delivered 1.5 million fully electric vehicles (BEVs) across its BMW, MINI, and Rolls-Royce brands. The BEV lineup expanded with the MINI Cooper SE, launched in Oxford in 2019, followed by the BMW iX3 in China and the iX and i4 in Germany in 2021.

On top of that, within a year, all German plants were equipped for full electric production. Globally, BMW continues to expand its electric production capabilities. In the U.S., Plant Spartanburg is preparing to build BEVs by 2026, and Mexico’s Plant San Luis Potosí will begin production of the NEUE KLASSE models in 2027.

Both already produce plug-in hybrids. Meanwhile, plants in Brazil, India, Thailand, South Africa, and China are actively producing electrified vehicles. To support this growth, the Competence Centre for E-Drive Production in Dingolfing has become a hub for electric powertrain components. By 2022, it reached a capacity of over 500,000 e-drives annually.

This expertise is now being scaled across other sites, including Regensburg, Leipzig, Spartanburg, and soon, Debrecen in Hungary, where the sixth-generation e-drives will be introduced with the NEUE KLASSE.
