ETS To Johor Bahru Expected To Launch In August After Many Delays

Let’s hope that our friends in Johor can enjoy the ETS services from August

The long-anticipated Electric Train Service (ETS) connecting Gemas to Johor Bahru is expected to launch this August, marking a significant milestone in Malaysia’s rail infrastructure development. The project, which faced multiple delays since construction began in 2017, is finally nearing completion.

Once operational, it will dramatically cut travel time between Kuala Lumpur and Johor Bahru from seven hours to just 4.5 hours. Costing RM9.5 billion, this electrified double-track rail extension covers a 192km route and includes key stops at Segamat, Kluang, Kulai, and JB Sentral.

Moreover, the ETS trains will operate at speeds of up to 140km/h, offering passengers a modern, efficient, and comfortable travel experience. The newly introduced ETS3 trains are equipped with 312 seats, onboard WiFi, USB charging ports and spacious luggage areas, aiming to enhance convenience and comfort for long-distance travelers.

This project forms the final phase of Malaysia’s west coast rail electrification program, which began in 2011 during the tenure of former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak. Despite numerous hurdles, including electricity supply testing complications and land acquisition issues, construction has pushed forward under the stewardship of YTL Construction and its joint venture partner SIPP Rail.

Authorities, including the Ministry of Transport and the Johor state government, have labeled the ETS extension a high-priority national infrastructure project. Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi has reiterated its importance, especially in relation to the broader southern rail development, which also includes the Johor Bahru–Singapore RTS Link, scheduled for completion by January 2027.

On top of that, upon launch, the Gemas–JB ETS line is expected to serve approximately 3,000 passengers daily. For many, it will offer a faster, safer, and more relaxing alternative to the four-hour road trip between Johor Bahru and Kuala Lumpur. This should finally make things a lot easier for Johoreans working or studying in KL.

The ETS service has already gained popularity on existing routes such as KL to Ipoh, where tickets often sell out weeks in advance, indicating strong public demand for high-speed rail travel. With its advanced amenities and reduced travel times, the new ETS extension is poised to significantly boost connectivity and convenience for southern Peninsular Malaysia.
