Why Is Perodua Looking At EV Battery Leasing For Their First EV

Proton set to challenge Perodua battery leasing with a lower priced new EV

Perodua has not explicitly confirmed a battery swapping system, they are exploring battery leasing and have stated that they are studying the possibility of battery swapping for their upcoming EV, the eMO-II.

Perodua is exploring battery swapping for its first electric vehicle (EV) to address concerns about high EV purchase prices and battery degradation, potentially offering a lower initial cost and ensuring owners always have a well-maintained battery.

Here is a more detailed breakdown:

The cost of the battery is a significant portion of an EV’s price, and Perodua is considering a battery leasing model to make their EV more affordable for the Malaysian market.

By leasing the battery, the initial purchase price of the car could be significantly lower, potentially around RM80,000 without the battery.

Perodua aims to ensure owners always have a battery in optimal condition by leasing the battery, rather than having the customer bear the responsibility for battery degradation or replacement.

Another major concern for potential EV buyers is the potential loss of value due to battery degradation, which Perodua is also addressing with the battery leasing scheme.

Here’s a breakdown of what we know:

Battery Leasing: Perodua is leaning towards a battery leasing program for their eMO-II EV, aiming to lower the initial purchase price and ensure owners always have a battery in good condition.

Battery Swapping Study: Perodua is also studying the possibility of battery swapping technology, but has not yet confirmed its implementation.

Perodua EV Concept: Perodua has already unveiled the eMO-II concept EV, which is expected to be an affordable, small electric car with a range of around 400km.

CATL Batteries: The eMO-II is expected to use a CATL-sourced lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery.

Affordable EV: Perodua aims for the car to be the cheapest EV in Malaysia, with a price target of under RM80,000. However, we see Chinese EV brands like Dongfeng selling their BOX Ev for below RM70k.

Charging Infrastructure: Perodua is collaborating with Petronas and Gentari to set up EV charging facilities at Perodua service centers.
