Is Magnet Marelli Developing Perodua’s First Electric Car

Magnet Marelli is an Italian company involved in EV parts

We have seen the all new Perodua electric car being field tested on Malaysian roads for some months now. Perodua’s first EV is being developed from the ground up, with a new platform NOT based on any existing Daihatsu or Toyota models.

Perodua has shared with the media that they are developing their first electric vehicle from scratch and we at www.dsf.my have discovered strong indication they are using Magneti Marelli components and know how and even vehicle design (in partnership with an Italian design house).

Did you know that Perodua management were in Italy with MITI early 2024?.

Magneti Marelli have been producing e-axles (in partnership with Japanese supplier Calsonic Kansei) and also electric vehicle inverters, battery management systems and thermal management solutions. Marelli also provides charging solutions for EVs, such as wall-boxes.

Perodua’s EV will be based on a new platform developed in-house and will feature a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack. Perodua management have also mentioned exploring Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) options for their EV.

The Perodua EV will probably utilize a CATL developed lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack, with a targeted range of 400-410 km.

Perodua is considering offering BaaS, where the battery is leased to the customer, potentially lowering the initial purchase price. This is yet to be finalised. This means Perodua will need to set-up battery swapping stations around the country (probably at every major Perodua dealership to start)

This EV is expected to have a high degree of local assembly, with over 30 percent initially and potentially increasing to over 60 percent after a few months of production.

The Perodua all new EV is aimed at younger buyers and small families, with a price target below RM80,000.

Perodua aims to launch the EV by the end of the year, with pre-production starting in September 2025.
