The highly successful MG4 family is officially expanding its footprint into the high-volume crossover segment. MG has announced that its first-ever pure-electric SUV based on the acclaimed platform will be called the MG 4X.
The new MG 4X EV has been shown and it’s quite exciting from a tech standpoint. According to brand insights, the “X” nomenclature is marketed by parent company SAIC to represent “infinite possibilities” for a younger demographic of tech-savvy buyers. Mechanically, the vehicle transforms the nimble MG4 hatchback formula into a larger, highly versatile crossover format designed to capture a major share of the global utility market.
Aggressive Crossover Styling and Design Cues
Visually, the MG 4X retains the athletic design language of its hatchback sibling while integrating distinct SUV characteristics. The front fascia boasts a commanding, dynamic bumper shape to highlight its sporting attributes, anchored by the brand’s signature illuminated logo and a futuristic through-type light bar.

Along the sides, a sharp, prominent waistline runs the length of the bodywork. To match its crossover positioning, the vehicle gains a noticeably elevated ground clearance for better versatility over uneven roads. The rear is anticipated to round out the rugged look with through-type LED taillights that mirror the distinctive split-spoiler aesthetic of the standard MG4.
A Smarter Cabin: Oppo Connectivity and Horizon Robotics ADAS
The technological advancements under the skin are where the MG 4X truly shines. The vehicle introduces an innovative smart cockpit co-developed alongside smartphone giant Oppo. This specialized “Hand-Car Interconnection” ecosystem promises seamless, zero-latency digital interaction, allowing users to mirror and control smartphone applications effortlessly through the vehicle’s primary infotainment display.

For active safety, the brand has partnered with Horizon Robotics to supply next-generation driver assistance hardware. The crossover comes standard with high-speed Navigate on Pilot (NOA) functions and advanced automated parking capabilities, which MG claims will deliver the most refined driver-assist experience within its price bracket.
Revolutionary Liquid-Solid-State Battery Tech
In a massive leap forward for mass-market electric vehicles, the MG 4X will adopt advanced liquid-solid-state battery technology from the base variant upward.
Moving away from traditional lithium-ion chemistries, the vehicle features a manganese-based battery system with a mere 5% liquid electrolyte content. This semi-solid-state architecture dramatically improves the vehicle’s thermal safety profile, reduces the risk of thermal runaway, and ensures optimal energy retention during cold-weather operation. The advanced pack delivers a highly competitive driving range of up to 510 km under CLTC testing cycles.
The Malaysian Perspective: Worth Bringing In at All?
As this compelling electric crossover prepares for global markets, it raises an inevitable question for local automotive onlookers: How much will the MG 4X cost here in Malaysia, and is it even worth bringing in?

If it does make landfall, the MG 4X would likely need to be priced around the RM120,000 to RM140,000 ballpark to remain competitive against established regional rivals. However, SAIC Motor Malaysia faces a steep uphill battle. The brand already heavily struggles to make a meaningful dent in local sales charts with its current locally-assembled (CKD) electric SUV, the MG S5.
With consumer trust in the mid-tier EV segment currently dominated by dominant players like BYD and Proton’s e.MAS network, introducing another niche crossover might just crowd showrooms rather than convert buyers. Unless MG Malaysia can back the 4X with an aggressively disruptive pricing strategy and an iron-clad local warranty, this solid-state marvel might face a tough reception on Malaysian roads.
