Best Selling EV’s In Malaysia Are All From China

Yes, Tesla is American but it is made in China

China rules the electric car industry right now and the Europeans are falling behind because of one main factor …… selling price. Yes, there are many other factors like cabin screen software, battery management, battery power delivery, factory warranty and more that seems to be coming from users on social media, but it is selling price that reduces the purchase appeal of a brand new electric car from Europe or even Korea.

BYD Atto2

Even with Tesla and Porsche doing rather well in the Malaysian electric vehicles sales charts for June, we still see the sold and delivered numbers of European branded electric vehicles in low numbers being adopted by Malaysians.

With a few new electric car launches planned for the 2nd half of 2025 and a a couple of electric car models making a big sales push in the coming months. We still see e:MAS 7, BYD Atto and BYD Seal taking the top spots month after month.

With the launch of the BYD Atto2 just around the corner, we are sure, August sales numbers will see the Atto2 in the top 3 spot and then when the e:MAS 5 (smaller version of the 7 which was teased recently) is launched, we will see the top 2 sales positions being taken by either the e:MAS 5 or the Atto2.

Why, do we predict this move? Well, both cars are brand new and priced to compete in a segment that is easily reached by middle class Malaysians looking to move into the electric car space.

Plus, both BYD and Proton e:MAS have been aggressively setting up new dealerships to cater to after sales and also customer engagement.

Meanwhile, many middle class Malaysians on a tight budget are eagerly waiting for the arrival of Perodua’s first electric car. Targeted at below RM80k, it might or might not be a sales hit. Why? Well, its not a rebadged Daihatsu or Toyota that promises utter reliability and great after sales.

This Perodua electric car is a ‘built from scratch’ Malaysian electric car which has many Malaysians worried about battery management, battery lifetime and also overall warranty.

Well, its going to be an interesting 5 months more in 2025 and we wait for more new car action.
