Lexus TZ Is A 6-Seater All-Electric SUV

The Lexus TZ is an all-new nameplate from the premium Japanese brand aimed at a specific niche.

Lexus has officially revealed the full details of the Lexus TZ, a new model that represents the brand’s first all-electric, three-row sport-utility vehicle. Developed under the core concept of a “Driving Lounge,” the TZ is engineered to combine the spaciousness and quietness of a luxury retreat with the performance characteristics of a dedicated battery-electric vehicle (BEV). While the US is the primary market for the TZ, Lexus will eventually launch a version for Europe, China and, critically, Japan – which makes it possible for Lexus Malaysia or the grey market to eventually import some to Malaysia.

Two lithium ion battery options will be offered – 76.96 kWh and 95.82 kWh with driving range estimates from 483km to 640 depending on which measurement protocol, market and configuration is used. The Lexus TZ features all-wheel drive with dual electric motors, each rated at 227 PS and 269Nm of torque. 0-100km/h is done in just 5.4 seconds.

Design and Aerodynamic Philosophy

The design of the Lexus TZ aims to balance the commanding presence of a powerful SUV with high-level aerodynamic efficiency.

  • Form Factor: The exterior silhouette is optimized to reduce drag, a critical factor in maximizing the range of a large-scale BEV.
  • Sustainability: Following the brand’s commitment to carbon neutrality, the TZ incorporates a significant amount of recyclable and sustainable materials throughout both the interior and exterior.

The “Driving Lounge” Interior

As a three-row SUV, the TZ prioritizes passenger comfort and natural relaxation.

  • Spatial Quality: The cabin is designed to provide “Lexus signature quietness” and ride comfort, minimizing the perceived size of the vehicle for the driver while maximizing room for passengers.
  • Advanced Visibility: The model features a Panoramic View Monitor with a newly developed 3D view, allowing the driver to see “through” the vehicle for easier maneuvering in tight spaces.
  • Intuitive Cockpit: The layout is designed to create a sense of unity between the driver and the machine, ensuring that despite its large footprint, the vehicle remains agile and easy to control.

Safety and Driver Assistance Technology

The Lexus TZ introduces several enhancements to the brand’s safety suite:

  • Emergency Driving Stop System: This system has been updated to include a new function that can bring the vehicle to a stop on a road shoulder during highway driving if the driver becomes unresponsive.
  • Enhanced Detection: The Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) has been upgraded to detect bicycles and motorcycles traveling alongside the vehicle, helping to prevent collisions during turns.
  • Proactive Alerts: The vehicle now includes a system that monitors for signs of driver drowsiness and provides active alerts.

Market Positioning and Competition

The Lexus TZ enters a rapidly expanding segment of luxury three-row electric SUVs just as Tesla retracts its Model X from production.

Within the global market, its primary competitors include:

  • Kia EV9: A strong non-luxury competitor that offers similar three-row utility at a competitive price point.
  • Rivian R1S: A rival that emphasizes off-road capability alongside its three-row electric configuration.
