The Volvo EX90 has been thoroughly updated and ‘re-launched’ in Malaysia with a new price.
Volvo Car Malaysia today launched the enhanced all-electric EX90 7 seater, which is locally-assembled at Volvo Car Manufacturing Malaysia in Shah Alam. For context, the EX90 was launched in Malaysia last year and the entire stock of the fully-imported first batch of EX90s are all sold out here. This enhanced model, though very similar on the outside, is a completely different vehicle on the inside. Plus, there are a number of changes to the options and pricing. The EX90 used to be fully imported for RM442,888 and now it’s available from just RM428,888. The first 100 customers get an RM25,000 cash rebate and a free wallbox worth RM3,990, effectively bringing the price of the new EX90 closer to RM400,000. Let’s go through some of those now to make sense of this launch.
Switch from 400V to 800V architecture and Accompanying Changes
The biggest change overall comes in the switch to an 800V architecture. This move reduces the amount of copper required in the vehicle’s wiring, reducing its cost, weight and heat generation during charging and discharging. The shift to 800V also enables faster charging. The EX90 now supports up to 350kW DC fast charging, up from 250kW. AC charging speed remains capped at 11kW.
Unfortunately, the battery capacity has also changed. The EX90 now comes with a 106 kWh battery (103 kWh usable), down from 111 kWh (107 kWh usable). The driving range suffers but only very slightly, as there are efficiency gains to moving to 800V. The older model has a 623km WLTP range while this one has a 617km WLTP range.
One final related change is the power output which comes as a combination of increased motor output and increased efficiency from the 800V system. The EX90 Twin Motor Performance is the only variant we’re getting in Malaysia for now. Previously, this variant had a total system output of 517PS and 910Nm of torque enabling a century sprint time of 4.9 seconds. Now it has a total power output of 680PS and 870Nm of torque, bringing the 0-100km/h time down to 4.2 seconds.
Other Changes To The Equipment
Some equipment changes are more obvious than others. The biggest change would be the removal of the LiDAR sensor, which Volvo Car Malaysia says will not negatively impact the safety suite. The EX90 now features dual Nvidia Drive AGX Orin chips and supports over-the-air software improvements.
There’s a new electrochromic glass sunroof that can turn opaque with a touch of a button. The interior has been upgraded to Nappa leather and there are two interior colourway: Charcoal with Light Ash decor or Cardamom with Brown Ash decor. The exterior features a new colour option: Mulberry Red. Existing colours are still available: Onyx Black, Sand Dune, Crystal White, and Vapour Grey.
The locally-assembled Volvo EX90 T8 Twin Motor Performance comes with a 5-year unlimited mileage warranty and an 8-year/160,000km battery warranty.
