The 308 VTi Gets Some New Tech & Spec

We already see many of these 308’s running around Klang Valley today. Majority according to our visual count happens to be the top version, the turbo. The non-turbo, the VTi is priced only about some 18% cheaper and so for many Malaysians in this earning segment are able to fork out the additional extra funds each month on the car loan. We are sure that this buyer phenomenon is similar in other markets where the 308 is selling. Now local brand guardian, Nasim has introduced a revised version of the VTi to give buyers more value for the purchasing Ringgit. We are one of the 1st few to get our hands on this revised 308 VTi and read on to find out why we think it deserves a showroom test drive.

Step inside the VTi cabin and you meet with a cabin that is shared with the higher specification Turbo. Now there is a multi function computer at the center top. Also, the twin climate control system from the Turbo is installed as well as cruise control.

Seat material has been upgraded with an attractive twin tone effect. Everything else looks the same. But more is to be had with a test drive.

The 1.6-liter engine is still good for 120bhp and 160Nm, which is not going to break any records, but this time around we noticed less engine note impending the cabin at ignition and also in city traffic. Insulation has been increased in the firewall.

Use the ‘sports’ mode and the gearbox management system shows its revisions in gearing ratios to allow the driver to get a more spirited drive. There is notably better pickup and in gear acceleration. Though not aggressive like with the Turbo is full revs it works rather well on the highway with good momentum and overtaking power. Exterior changes are the body coloured side mouldings, 16inch ‘Santiaguito’ alloys, electric folding side view mirrors and a new grille design.

Peugeot has not forgotten about safety as this 308 gets a 5-star Euro NCAP crash protection rating. We have to mention that we liked the occupant safety display above rear-view mirror that informs you which passengers don’t have their seat belts on, which is necessary with rear passengers today. Additional safety kit like 4-airbags, ISOFIX mount points for child seats, ABS, EBD, EBA is also included at its selling price of just RM96,666.

Not bad and in fact impressive when we continue to inform you that a high quality 6-speaker audio system, automatic headlights and wipers, as well as the ‘follow me home’ lights normally found only on premium cars are included as standard equipment. This 308 VTi comes with a high level of class-leading equipment, sporting ride, ample space and a build quality that leaves its competitors way behind and in this segment buyers are starting to be more conscious about every Ringgit spent and it is time others rose to the challenge of Peugeot and start providing for better cars and equipment in this highly competitive segment. Test drive it before you dismiss it.
