0Ford Mondeo to receive a Bosch produced hybrid version by 2013
Ford’s next-generation Mondeo will have a full-hybrid version that will be launched in 2013, completing the automaker’s European range of five electric-powered cars. The hybrid will be powered by a 160bhp 1.6-litre light-turbo Ecoboost engine and will have a 40bhp electric motor to boost total power output to 200bhp. Sources say that this electric motor will be contained in the housing of a front-drive, six-speed dual-clutch transmission.
How the motor is placed inside the transmission is similar to the design of the Bosch ‘full hybrid’ system, which is featured in the four-wheel drive transmissions of Porsche, Range Rover, and Volkswagen. The electric motor replaces a torque converter in the Bosch system, implying that the electric motor could replace the clutches in the carmaker’s dual-clutch transmission. The Mondeo hybrid is intended for the global market and will replace the mid-size saloons in North America, Asia, and Europe.
Joint development is being undertaken in the US, the UK, and Germany; however, engineers at Ford’s Dunton research centre in Essex are believed to be leading this project to develop the hybrid powertrain. A Focus EV will arrive in 2012 while a petrol-electric C-Max and plug-in hybrid C-Max will be launched in 2013.
