PEKEMA Forced To Stop Importing Lamborghini Vehicles Using APs

PEKEMA has been blocked from importing Lamborghini products. What brand is next?

PEKEMA and the government are back in the news again. This time, the Ministry Of International Trade And Industry (MITI) has ordered PEKEMA (Persatuan Pengimport dan Peniaga Kenderaan Melayu Malaysia) to stop importing Lamborghinis. This is according to a letter issued on the 18th of August 2022.

Lamborghini Reopens In Kuala Lumpur With The Sunway Group

In the letter, the Ministry says that all effective 17 August 2022, Open AP companies will not be allowed to import brand new Lamborghini vehicles. Instead, that right will be reserved for the franchise owner, SunAgata Supercars Sdn Bhd, known to the public as Lamborghini Kuala Lumpur.

For decades, grey importers have used Approved Permits to bring in loads of reconditioned vehicles. This gave them an unfair advantage over the official franchise owners – often making it nearly impossible to compete with fully taxed, brand new vehicles.

MITI letter to PEKEMA

We do wonder why Lamborghini was singled out and not other supercar manufacturers that have franchises in Malaysia. Aston Martin Kuala Lumpur, McLaren Kuala Lumpur, Ferrari and more all have official brand custodians in the country. Perhaps it is only a matter of time before PEKEMA is asked to stop importing those brands as well.

Here’s the transcript of the original letter from MITI.
