AION Hyper GT Revealed, Could Take On The Taycan In China

The AION Hyper GT, a possible Taycan rival, is the slipperiest production car.

The GAC Motors brand may have little significance in Malaysia, but in its native China, the company has huge ambitions. This is evidenced by its latest launch through sub-brand AION. At the 2022 Guangzhou Auto Show, GAC Motors showed the AION Hyper GT – a new 4-door electric sports coupé that rivals the Porsche Taycan on paper.

Those who have been following AION’s progress would have noted some similarities between the AION Hyper GT and the AION Hyper SSR. Both feature scissor doors (AION says it features “dihedral synchro-helix actuation” technology) and a very low-slung design.

Indeed, both vehicles are built on the AEP 3.0 platform with a 900V architecture. That being said, the design inspiration for the Hyper GT actually comes from a concept car called the ENO.146.

The design language is known as “Water Drop Shaped By The Wind” on the Hyper GT, hence the more fluid form. The aerodynamics are said to be the best of any production car at just 0.19X Cd!

The single-motor version of the AION Hyper GT will have an output of 250kW and 434Nm of torque, enabling a 0-100km/h time of just 4.9 seconds. No battery specs have been published yet, but AION mentioned up to 480kW DC Fast Charging and the possibility of complete battery swapping technology.

The Hyper GT features a “Wind Blade Grille” that opens automatically when it reaches a certain speed to reduce drag and wind resistance. The spoiler also rises at around 80km/h to generate downforce as air passes around it.

This EV also features unique ‘electrode’ headlights, which give the impression of a pulse current bursting under a strong voltage. You can see the effect for yourself in the video below.

The intelligent driving aid components, including cameras, radars and other sensors, have been integrated into a little bulge on the roof. The design is further accentuated with a set of 19″ six-spoke ‘turbo’ wheels’ for a more race-car-like look.

Pricing for the AION Hyper GT has not been finalised but rumours indicate that it may start at about 300,000 yuan, which is about RM191,000 at today’s rates.

Customers in China can expect to take delivery of the AION Hyper GT in late 2023 or early 2024.
