Porsche Announces Next Gen All-Electric Boxster And Cayman
What will happen to the prices of used petrol Porsche cars?
When one thinks Porsche, what usually comes to mind? For me, that would be the roaring flat 6 engine on the iconic Porsche 9111 models, what about you? Well as far as the 911 goes, it will only be made as a hybrid for now but Porsche has just announced that the next generation Boxster and Cayman will be fully-electric.
Yes, just as with all the internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles of yesteryear, the Porsche Boxster and Cayman models are now also going to go fully electric. However, that is not what I am concerned about, I’d rather figure out what would happen to the Porsche 981 and 718 models, the last of the Porsche ICE vehicles. Let’s explore.
First things first, Porsche announced the electrification of the Boxster and Cayman models at the automaker’s annual conference in 2022 and stated that the first of these electric vehicles (EVs) would be launching in 2025. The cars will also be built on the Premium Platform Electric and be made available with either 1 or 2 motors.
On top of that, it is believed that the next generation Porsche Boxster and Cayman models will resemble the outgoing petrol models save for a few differences here and there but that is typical of any new generation vehicle. However, there is a strong case that the headlights of the cars will look similar to that of the Porsche Taycan.
Moreover, there are still not many details about the mechanics for either of these two future EVs but since we do know that the electric Porsche Boxster and Cayman models will be running on the Premium Platform Electric which also underpins the Audi A6 E-tron and Porsche Macan EV, we can guess it will be similar to the Macan.
So now we ask the most important question, with some of Porsche’s most famous entry level cars becoming EVs, what will happen to the prices of used Porsche 981 and Porsche 718 cars since these are the last two fully ICE vehicles left in the Porsche lineup? Well, expect prices to skyrocket.
The way I see it, these two cars are about to become collector’s editions as Porsche will no longer be manufacturing ICE versions of the 981 an 718 so the demand and therefore, price of these cars will go up drastically. We have seen this happen before our very eyes as well, although not exactly under the same circumstance.
Remember when Toyota announced the newest Supra would be made in partnership with BMW? Well when that happened, all the Mk 4 Supra cars suddenly became far more expensive as many felt that that would be the last “real” supra and the A90 would have just been a rebadged BMW.
