The Honda Civic Type R (FL5) has arrived in Malaysia for RM399,900.

The sixth generation Civic Type R has arrived in Malaysia with a price tag of RM399,900. The ultimate front-wheel drive, front-engined performance vehicle is available in limited quantities for 2023. Only 19 units have been allocated and Honda Malaysia will draw lots to decide which bookings get converted to sales for this first batch of Type R vehicles. Order books for the first batch are open now and will remain so until the 15th of October Honda Malaysia will ballot the application for respective customers. More units are expected to come in 2024. Demand for this model is so high that order-taking has been temporarily halted in Japan, where the car is made.

About the Honda Civic Type R (FL5)

As ‘tradition’, the Type R is built upon the hatchback variant of the Civic. Many aspects have been kept similar to the outgoing 5th generation model, including the 5-door bodystyle, the turbocharged K20 engine and 6-speed manual. There are improvements of course. The car is no longer made in the UK but Japan. Plus, the engine’s output has been increased and the flywheel has been lightened too.

The 2.0L VTEC Turbo now produces 319PS and 420Nm of torque, which is an increase of 9PS and 20Nm. 0-100km/h takes just 5.5 seconds and the top speed is 272km/h. There are now four driving modes – Comfort, Sport, +R, and Individual. Individual is a new drive mode that allows for user customization for the engine, steering, suspension, engine sound, rev matching and meter cluster.

The 6-speed manual gearbox still has rev-matching but now it support dropping from 2nd gear to 1st gear. The gearknob is teardrop shaped and features an optimised shift gate. Overall the gearbox has also been strengthened.

Aerodynamic changes have resulted in a 12% reduction in the Civic Type R’s CD value. While the platform is the same as before it has been optimised over the last generation. The braking system has been upgraded to a two-piece brake disc.

Track driving is improved with the +R mode, which brings up more metrics on the digital instrument cluster including a LogR Display with information on temperature, steering angle, yaw rate, and more. Another upgrade is Honda Sensing, which brings Forward Collision Warning, Collision Mitigation Braking System, Lane Departure Warning, Road Departure Mitigation, Auto High Beam, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keep Assist System, and Lead Car Departure Notification System. Honda Connect is also featured here, enabling better safety, security and convenience through the owner’s smartphone.

The cockpit gets the classic ‘red and black’ Type R treatment. You’ll find red carpet mats and red Type R Sports Seats in front wrapped in a new material. Aluminium is featured as well on the centre console and shift knob. There’s also a serialized Type R to give owners an increased sense of connection and pride to their vehicles.

The 6th generation Honda Civic Type R is available in Malaysia in Championship White only. You get 19″ wheels in matte black, Type R badges, a red Honda logo, a new aluminium spoiler and an aero-optimised bodykit.
