Proton Launches Xchange Programme To Support Safer And Greener Mobility

Now you can trade in your older vehicle and get a brand new Proton from it

While many Malaysians are feeling the pinch these days, we see more and more older cars being driven on the roads here today, well Proton may just have a solution for anyone looking to buy a new car but can’t make those kinds of financial decisions just yet to bolster the government’s efforts toward improved road safety and sustainable mobility

As such, Proton has officially launched the Proton Xchange Programme. The initiative encourages owners of old and unroadworthy vehicles to trade them in for new Proton models. Open to all car brands, the programme is being run in collaboration with Car Medic Sdn Bhd, a certified AATF approved by the Department of Environment and the JPJ.

Moreover, the launch event, held at the Proton Centre of Excellence, was officiated by the Minister of Transport, YB Anthony Loke Siew Fook. Also present were Tan Sri Syed Faisal Albar, Chairman of Proton, Dr. Li Chunrong, CEO of Proton, representatives from Car Medic, and officials from agencies such as JPJ, MIROS, MARii and the Ministry of Transport.

To support the programme, Proton has allocated RM4.8 million to incentivize participation and ensure proper disposal of old vehicles. Each participant will receive RM2,000 in overtrade value when purchasing a new Proton vehicle, including the top-selling Proton e.MAS 7 electric vehicle. The pilot programme runs until the end of December 2025.

Eligibility also requires vehicles to be at least 15 years old and no longer viable for safe road use. The scheme covers sedans, MPVs, vans, 4x4s, lorries and buses. Participants must submit proof of ownership and deregistration, including a Vehicle Ownership Certificate (VOC), JPJK1KD form from JPJ, and a Certificate of Destruction (COD) from Car Medic.

On top of that, Car Medic facilitates the process through its e-Dereg service, which includes door-to-door assistance, towing, deregistration and COD issuance. The service supports digital deregistration for MyKad holders in selected regions and handles group deregistrations for more than five vehicles within two working days.

Proton, the only Malaysian automaker offering ICE, mild-hybrid, and EV options, aims to lead the shift toward cleaner and safer mobility. With future models in the pipeline, the company remains committed to supporting Malaysia’s 2050 carbon neutrality goal.

Minister Anthony Loke praised Proton’s leadership, urging other automakers to follow suit. So impressed was he that he made a surprise announcement that anyone who partakes in this Xchange program from now until the end of this year will enjoy 1 year FREE road tax as well.
